Letters
zodzelig: You are right. Why did I waste even a moment on this? The perils of being drunk and bored on the internet…— June 8, 2009 3:01 p.m.
Letters
Refried: You are 100% correct. Yes, I have braved the waters, which I think is the reason why I tend to rise to the defense of artists rather than criticize them. Criticism is important, with out a doubt, but I think when a writer is first starting out, support is even more important! Yet for the haters of the world this is never a consideration. For them it is just an opportunity to hurt, to lash out and thereby somehow empower themselves. I don’t understand this and I hope I never do…— June 7, 2009 7:23 p.m.

Well, you got one thing right – you definitely are a narcissist! It’s all about you!! Clearly!!!! (Whoa! Is that too many exclamation points for you to handle? Sorry!!! Oops!!!!) What you fail to comprehend is that some of us like to encourage young writers rather than try to break their spirits. In the face of a culture that has turned disrespect of aspiring artist into some sort of perverse sport, I feel a little pat on the back now an again is the least I can do. Sadly, there are legions of your ilk that seem to gain great satisfaction from hulling hurtful bile at aspiring young artist. Why this is I do not know, nor do I care. Never the less, I will continue to stand in the face of the haters and offer encouragement to young artist the best I can. Are any of you with me?— June 7, 2009 6:21 p.m.
Diversion from the Humdrum
Moving in with his schizophrenic son was a bad idea, the worst idea, but what other options did he have? Dealing with the mental/emotional illness of a loved one is beyond anything you might think society has prepared you for. Disaster in full 3D techno color, digital, enhanced, unavoidable horror! Pile on the other issues we know our hero is vulnerable too… This may be the death of all that matters to us, unless our hero is made of tougher stuff! I have the highest hopes for his deliverance, yet I have grave reservations about the crippling power of substance abuse…— May 19, 2009 7:02 p.m.
Searching for San Diego's Sea Turtles and a Job
Nasreen, you are doing swimmingly! Do not fret those who can’t tell the difference between first person narrative and narcissism. I’m sure the dweebs who used the term didn’t even know what it meant other that it made them feel so-much-smarter to say it! Whatever!!! You must forge forward and we the appreciative readers of The Reader look forward to your contributions to come…— May 19, 2009 6:44 p.m.
Moral Failure?
A little dab’ll do ‘ya! Happy I am to see our TGIF hero return, and sorry I am to see where he has ended up, yet considering the ultimate doom scenarios I had envisioned, all is well as could be! Glad to see that you are not… um… dead! For the record, my own brother has the substance abuse disease – or what ever you want to call it. He is basically a non-functional human being, and in my efforts to help him through his ordeal I came to discover the blocks and blocks of recovery homes located around “Palomino Hospital” – as you call it. It is a sobering testimony to the massive and pervasive impact of this disease that threatens to cripple our society and how the public is so reluctant to acknowledge that it exists. Yet in regard to sinister Dr. W, consider this a wake-up call! Many of those who staff our health care system are inadequate to deal with the real and incredibly difficult problems our society throws at them. You blame him for his inadequacy, but perhaps you and your room mate present problems far beyond the training he has been provided. Who is truly to blame in that circumstance??? I leave that question for all to ponder…— April 10, 2009 8:55 p.m.
Peruvian Currency
I’m worried too… For a guy who lives from week to week, missing three paychecks is not a good thing! Not to mention the achy melancholy regretful poignant life observations withdraw I’ve been having not reading TGIF. :/— April 3, 2009 10:26 p.m.
UCSD pays for trans-species project.
Tina: You are clearly far more articulate and passionate about this issue than Ms. Dragon, which makes me wonder – just what is your stake in all of this? Are you Cardenas’ publicist? A spokesperson for some advocacy group? A media watchdog? Or just some lone, caped, Transgender Avenger? =O_O=— March 31, 2009 3:33 p.m.
UCSD pays for trans-species project.
Ah, Tina, you humble me! Animism, certainly, I forget my primevalism roots… Yet, I really wonder how much of the true primal animalism is at play here, or just pop culture furriness? How many do you know who have any idea of the philosophies of ancient cultures? Few to none, I suspect… Is there a metric to measure it? A good PhD topic, yes? I’m not goin’ there! Nope! Forget it!!! :P— March 28, 2009 8:23 p.m.
UCSD pays for trans-species project.
This article raised several issues… First of all, I’ve been to the Calit2 facility at UCSD. It’s a very impressive, three-story, multi-million-dollar monument to technology. Some might say that not much of real value in terms of improving the human condition goes on there, and I cannot disagree. Yet it’s freakin’ cool none the less, and in terms of monuments, it’s a lot more interesting than most the others whose only purpose is to get crapped on by pigeons! Secondly, we’ve somehow gotten entangled here with developing cyberspace technology and gender-related mental illness. The two are by no means interconnected. Much significant work is being done in both these fields separately and the predilections of the particular subject of this article should by no means taint people’s opinions of the merit of each topic individually. Cyberspace, or Virtual Reality, technology is a rapidly developing realm of science. The sub-field of knowledge visualization is becoming increasingly important in our data saturated modern world. Much of this data is being used at this very moment to track your mouse clicks, internet site movement, cell phone content and locations as we speak. Hmm… And you don’t think cyberspace technology is important? Gender-related mental illness is a whole different issue. Somehow our society has given legitimacy to people who feel that they were born into the wrong body and I will not now contest this. Yet I think this article raises the salient point – even if you somehow accept the idea that people could be born into the wrong gender – even those who might believe this laugh at the idea that there are those who feel they have been born into the wrong species. What’s the difference? This is my question. I would maintain that there is none. If you accept that people are born into the wrong gender than you must accept that there are people born into the wrong species. And if you accept this – then we’ve got some problems right here in river city… Frankly, I blame Disney. The inundation of the anthropomorphism of animals in our formative years cannot but have consequences for people with fragile mental states. Curse you, Bambi!!!— March 28, 2009 6:28 p.m.
