Qualcomm executives sued
I can say that for the department I was familiar with, that was clearly the case. The only Indians and Chinese that I know were cut already had their citizenship or green card. H1Bs appeared safe. I'm wondering if the "engineer shortage" explanation is still being used in other high tech companies . I haven't heard it lately in the press. I'm guessing that in light of the recent industry layoffs, as well as the egregious actions of Edison and Disney, that maybe they are holding off hiring H1Bs for now. At least until after the election.— February 6, 2016 10:31 p.m.
Qualcomm executives sued
I guess they didn't take the mandatory, annual "Corruption Training" that all employees were required to attend. It was a highly detailed description of the dos and don'ts of dealing with foreign government entities. The irony.— February 6, 2016 10:18 p.m.
Have some unemployment dip with that holiday
Don, there was surely lost business; Samsung and lost market share in China from MediaTek. But the layoffs, as with the stock buybacks seemed to be largely driven by the activist investors, Jana Partners. Anyway rumors as of last fall, were that more cuts are planned for summer.— January 24, 2016 8:48 p.m.
Have some unemployment dip with that holiday
Don, the affected ones at Qualcomm were told in mid-September and their last day was November 20th. So I would think they would be in these unemployment statistics for Nov./Dec. The total for San Diego was about 1300. They are included in the latest released EDD notice: http://www.edd.ca.gov/jobs_and_training/warn/WARN… Also, I thought WARN notices were only required if it was 50+ affected in a given month.— January 23, 2016 10:21 p.m.
Qualcomm...a "patent troll"?
Strange news, considering Qualcomm itself was being sued by a company called ParkerVision, for patent infringement. The suit was tossed on appeal last summer. And I recall an article here in the Reader about them being sued by a company over some sort of pet tracking device, being made by one of Qualcomm's acquisitions. They even had a notice on their internal home page encouraging employees to support laws that would make patent trolling difficult.— January 21, 2016 9:32 p.m.
Qualcomm layoffs begin
ImJustABill- Some who got cut had high review ratings and even had received performance awards. But it's appearing that cronyism and tribal behavior had an influence as well. I think Don has it fairly accurate as to how the decision-making was delegated. Seems the director and VP level had to do final approval. In the cases I stated above, the director did the notifying.— September 22, 2015 9:12 p.m.
Qualcomm layoffs begin
Fact: one department hired around thirty engineers in the last twelve month period; all had either Chinese or Indian names. This figure was arrived at by simply counting the "Please welcome____ to our department..." emails. Surprisingly, two were even added after the public layoff announcement. At least three middle-aged white males made the layoff list from this same department. A developing story, obviously, because a very tight lid is being kept on this list.— September 20, 2015 10:31 p.m.
The rise, fall, and re-rise of Nathan Fletcher
They created Q-PAC for citizen employees to contribute to their own demise. The letter that requested donations mentioned it was for supporting candidates who back the Q's interests, one of which was "...immigration reform, to attract talent..."— September 20, 2015 3:27 p.m.
Qualcomm layoffs begin
No metal detector, last I heard. But the guard is probably put there to buy time for the big boys, as a human shield. I think he's been there for a while, first heard about him this last spring.— September 20, 2015 3:14 p.m.
Qualcomm layoffs begin
I have a friend that works in the main building (N). The top guys are on the 10th floor and this friend tells me there is a large, burly guard greeting all visitors to that floor. Only place where Q have posted a guard, to my knowledge.— September 18, 2015 12:06 a.m.
