Six Bars Left

Tell the whole story man. The bars on the revu are closing but who cares. They cater to dumb youngsters from the US anyway. You just wrote an article about cock fighting at Las Chavelas. If you were actually standing in front of Las Chavelas then you had to see the remodeling that's going on at the bar on the corner of La Cahuilla(across from the police station) as well as the bar next door to the Playboy/Odyssey.Also there's a reasonably new place that opened across from the back side of Hong Kong and Las Chavelas called the Mermaid if I'm not mistaken.'Collected courtesans, bastions of ribaldry, hoochies and go-go dancers. That's pure titillation. How do you really feel about these poor women? Stop making money talking about them and start talking to them. That's where the real stories are. Not by translating the pablum spewed by the local fishwraps.

The Battle of Madison Avenue

Hey RG, You mention Manifest Destiny but you don't explain it. It was a belief in predestination based in great measure on the doctrine of the chosen people of the old testament. The Puritans believed they were the chosen people of the new world.It was their excuse to implement lebensraum. Also the actual incident that sparked the war was the uncertainty over what constituted the southern border of Texas. Was it the Rio Grande as the US claimed or the Nueces River as Mexico claimed (James K Polk, Adolph Hitler and Saddam Hussein all used border incidents to justify land grabs). As for the treaty of Guacamole Helado (Guadalupe Hidalgo)it's just another broken American promise (see articles VIII, IX and the omitted article X).As for its impact on the US Civil War I definitely agree that it made the war a much bloodier affair. That was because many of the military leaders who led Union and Confederate forces fought alongside each other as young officers during the US-Mexico conflict. They knew each others strengths(and weaknesses). Among those who spoke out against the US invasion of a sovereign nation were such great Americans as Henry David Thoreau and a young Illinois politician named Abraham Lincoln. I know I'm just a dumb dishwasher so my words carry no weight but maybe the words of an ex president might mean something;"Since we have been in Matamoros a great many murders have been committed...Some of the volunteers and about all the Texans seem to think it perfectly right to impose on the people of a conquered City to any extent(at one point General Zachary Taylor refused to accept any more men from Texas), and even to murder them where the act can be covered by dark. And how much they seem to enjoy acts of violence too!...I had a horror of the Mexican War...only I had not moral courage to resign..."Ulysses S Grant. And what about the battle of San Pascual, where that dirtbag Kit Carson said "the greasers won't fight." As advocates of Arizona's AB1070 are discovering, we still have a lot of fight left in us.

When the Sex Stopped

The siete was closed twice. The first time was for the curfew violations. This was a national response to the shooting of the soccer player in Mexico City. The second time was a health code check which revealed the false health cards. From what I understand this doctor would set himself up in a room in the hotel behind el siete. He'd then see girls two and three at a time.

Dollar Days Done?

I agree with you RG. Whenever I think of those jerks I recall an incident where they were used to bully a group of Tijuanenses who were staging a sit in at city hall. Most of the group was comprised of women and children who had been displaced from their land. The local politicians used them like stormtroopers and the yellow shirts brutally complied. Most locals that I know avoid them like the plague. You reap what you sow.

When the Sex Stopped

La Siete de Copas, Chavelas, Hong Kong, and the Titanic are all owned by the same person (I'm not sure about Adelita's or Valentina's). The owner was sending his girls to a doctor who didn't work out of the official health bulding that operates in the cahuila. This doctor was certifying the girls health cards at a slightly reduced rate (I was told 100 pesos) than what they are usually charged at the health clinic. This is where the bulk of the infractions occurred. The girls were mistakenly led to believe that the cards they had were valid.

Vigilante Minutemen patrol border near Campo

I lived in Dulzura for ten years.It is down the road( Hwy 94)from Potrero.I arrived just before Clinton began operation: gatekeeper.My grandfather and I witnessed firsthand, the terrible hardships endured by the human beings, driven into the rugged hills of the east county. On weekends my grandfather would prepare sandwiches and I would hike into the nearby hills and deliver them to those I passed on the trails. Many of them told me of the hardships they'd encountered.I had several run ins with what I came to call, The FOX (F*****g Old Xenophobes)Militia. None of them positive.The one I most vividly remember was with an armed, white haired fellow, with a thick southern drawl, who told me to go back to Mexico. I told him I was born in Los Angeles. That seemed to piss him off even more. He then accused me of being a coyote and then a drug smuggler. I wanted to tell him that I was just a humble man taking food to people I see suffering. But I didn't think he'd understand.

The Last Sunny Day For A While

Sorry to hear about your pain. I carry a slight limp from an old injury and know the feeling. Speaking of which, I smoke, filtered DELICADOS. They just revamped the look of their flip top twenty pack. If I know I'll be staying in the US for a couple of days I'll buy the twenty-four cigarette, soft pack. Took your advice about the Sobre Ruedas. Got a few good deals and ate some delicious gorditas stuffed with chicken con mole and nopales. Hope you feel better soon. Well, I'm off to wash dishes tonight at The French Gourmet.
