Stingrays, dog bites, and razor wire

A week of rescues

May 15

— HP dispatched to a scene where a subject climbed around a fence with razor wire, then jumped into the water around the Fifth Avenue Landing. Upon HP arriving and locating the subject he was soon taken into custody for being under the influence of drugs.

— Vessel bailing water at LJ Shores. Panga-type vessel being towed into boat launch. Rescue West, Jet 3 and 31 Sam respond. LJS handles the call surfboat cancelled.

— Vessel dead in water; 20 ft. Sea ray 3 POB. Guardian responds and tows vessel to Santa Clara ramp.

— Stingray injury at Blacks Beach. Jet 5 responds due to no beach access. Patient located and will self-treat.

— Seizure at 850 coast blvd. on a 50 y/o male. U 32, E 13 and Medic 9 responds. Medic 9 transports patient to Scripps LJ.

— Male partially buried in the sand near Dover court. Lifeguards and Fire Respond. Metro command asked to dispatch a trench rescue response per 3 Sam. Victim freed; no medical treatment needed for the victim.

— 20 y/o female fainted at the Southern Comfort station. LG’s and Fire respond. No aid from LG’s, fire handles the call.

May 14

— HP responded to the entrance of the bay to assist SD Lifeguards with a rescue of two jetski operators that were in distress (stuck in kelp). Upon our arrival, the jet skis were being towed into the bay by the lifeguards. HP took the operators aboard their vessel and then towed the skis to the HP Dock.

— Guardian II provides an emergency tow of a disabled 28’ cruiser from Fisherman’s Channel to SDYC.

— VHF call of an overturned vessel off Pt Loma. R W, 1 Sam, M 1, SDHP and USCG respond. 3 POB are rescued by a Good Sam 17’ center console who leaves scene with POB and is stopped of Ballast Pt. by R W. SDHP meets R-W and take over 3 POB. Sea Tow contracted for salvage of vessel at last known position of 32 40.456n x 117 16.043w.

— USCG reports to PWCs dead in the water inside surf off Pt Loma near PLNC. R West, 1 Sam, Jet-1, FF Bat-13, 2 L and R 4 respond. R W tows one PWC from inside surf. Jet 1 pulls the other from the beach. Both POB uninjured. R W tows PWCs to SD Bay and turns over to SD Harbor Police.

May 13

— Animal bite? at 2600 Mission Blvd. on an 18 y/o female. U 22, E 21 and M 18 respond. Victim has a stingray envenomation and is transported to SMB for treatment.

— Del Mar lifeguards notify SDLG that there is a stingray patient at Blacks. Del Mar LG’s respond on behalf of State LG’s and handle the call.

— Cliff rescue at the boundary line on a 33 y/o female un-injured. LG’s respond with northern area cliff response unit. LG’s clear, victim rescued.

May 12

— While on a call for service in a Shelter Island Marina, HP arrested a subject for an outstanding warrant.

— HP responded to the A-3 Anchorage (Laurel Street) to investigate a theft of a dinghy that was taken off a vessel that was moored.

— Fully clothed person swimming across Mission Bay Channel Mouth. Report came over VHF 16. Rescue 5 and 4 Sam respond. Rescue 5 picks swimmer up and drops off at Mariners Basin. No mental problems.

May 11

— HP responded to a dinghy dock behind the Marine Exchange on Shelter Island. The dock had been cluttered with debris, trash and small vessels on top of the dock for a long period of time. After HP spent several weeks posting the items for removal, the items were taken to the trash. Three small vessels (dinghy’s / canoes) were impounded at the Harbor Police dinghy dock in an attempt to locate the owners. The dock will now be receiving necessary repairs.

— Man down on boardwalk at Windemere Ct. Unit 100, Engine 21 and Medic 21 respond. Fire and Medics handle.

May 10

— HP responded to the A-3 Anchorage at Laurel Street to investigate a verbal dispute between a few boaters. The situation was peacefully resolved.

— Person fishing in the MPA at La Jolla Cove. Call came in through DFG. Unit 36 reports that fisherman left the area.

— Psych patient at 700 Manhattan Ct. 2 Sam, Medic 20 and PD respond. Patient transported to Sharp Hospital.

— Possible cliff fall at Carmelo St. and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. 5150, not a cliff call. 1 Sam, Engine 20 and Medic 19 respond. Medics transport for evaluation to unknown destination.

— LG advised to be on the lookout for at risk female near La Jolla or Del Mar. 33 y/o female, Chinese with black pants and pink or light blue jacket. No sightings.

May 9

— MDC of 2 y/o female with dog bite to face at 4111 Ocean Blvd. U 21, fire, and PD respond. Medic 4 transports to Children’s.

— FCC reports 8 y/o male having seizures at 427 Coast blvd. 3 Sam, U 32 and fire respond. MR9 to Children’s.

— MB requests medics for a 22 yo M with a stingray wound. Medics canceled.

— 2 Sam requests medics for a 20 y/o F ALOC. Medic 15 transports to Sharp.

— SMB requests medics for a 24 y/o male slip and fall on the jetty. 21 Sam responds. Medic 44 transports to Sharp.

May 08

— HP was dispatched to a fire aboard a 40-foot sail boat in a Harbor Island Marina. Harbor Police and SDFD worked together to extinguish the flames and control the scene. The vessel sustained major flame and smoke damage.

— HP responded to the A-3 Anchorage at Laurel Street to investigate a verbal dispute between a few boaters. The situation was peacefully resolved.

— Possible dog bite at dog beach. 1 Sam, and Fire respond. LG clear Fire and medics handle the call.

— Person sleeping near the cliff at Citizen’s Trail. 31 Sam and U 34 respond. U34 contacts the male who is intoxicated and is walked up the trail. Person is not in danger of self. LG’s clear.

— Vessel in channel dead in the water. Vessel is a 20ft center console 3 POB. Guardian responds. Good Samaritan vessel is on scene and will handle.

— Vessel dead in the water without an anchor at the mouth of the channel. Marine I respond. Marine I tows vessel to turning basin and helps set an anchor; LG’s clear.

— Stingray victim at Blacks Beach; 45 y/o male. Unit 34 responds. U 34 provides transport to the top of black Gold Rd. for transport.

— Man down after bike accident at 700 Thomas Ave. U 24, 21 Sam, Fire and Medics respond. Medic 25 transports to Scripps.

— OB Pier jumper at the north T. Jumper has a good stroke. 1 Sam, R 5 and U 12 respond. LG’s from OB put guards in to check on the jumper. PD requested because guard had a hand up. Jumper cited and released.

San Diego Lifeguards are a 24 hour rescue agency whose responsibilities include water rescue, boat rescue, marine fire suppression, coastal cliff rescue, underwater search and recovery, swift water and flood search, rescue and emergency medical response. San Diego Lifeguards also handle enforcement of city, state and federal laws and regulations. Lifeguards are classified as peace officers with the power of arrest.
