My heart goes out to Japan, a country I have visited and loved, and hope to one day return to. This is the country that is currently in the spotlight, but it’s not the only one that needs help. Because I don’t have the emotional capacity to weep for every one of the billion suffering souls in this world, or the mental ability to remain conscious of them all simultaneously, I help in the only way I know how — to send a bit of money to a respected and established organization I researched on CharityNavigator.com that will know how best to allocate it. As one of my friends recently tweeted after donating a small sum to the Japanese Red Cross, “It made me feel a little better.”

Barbarella, You put into words what many people are grappling with. How to help so many who need it. Bless your Dad for getting out there and giving so much of himself. We should all be that way. Thanks. Lynn Stedd

The Haiti disaster struck me the most. I have family in Chile and friends in Japan but still Haiti seemed so much worse for those reasons you pointed out. What really infuriated me was when Pat Robertson said that Haiti deserved it because they made a pack with the devil to free themselves from French rule. Haiti is our Africa of the western hemisphere, no one really gives a damn what happens there.
