The air exploded with cheers as reggae star Matisyahu took the stage Saturday evening to cap off the MTS Kick Gas Festival at Qualcomm Stadium. The preshow excitement would prove to be justified, as Matisyahu delivered, dazzling the audience with his fusion of reggae and hip-hop vocals, sung over a hard-rock backing band.

Matisyahu displayed an engaging stage presence to go with his rousing music. During many of the songs’ instrumental breaks, Matisyahu took the opportunity to throw his arms out and spin around with his face to the sky. This childlike and unpretentious act of joy was Matisyahu at his best, genuinely enjoying himself and letting the audience know it.

The show came to its climax with a lengthy beat-box solo. Here Matisyahu stunned the audience into silence with his vocal control. After the jaw-dropping three-minute display, the crowd responded with their loudest applause of the night. Matisyahu then showed his appreciation by testing the waters of the audience's love by making two daring dives into the audience for a well-deserved crowd surf.
