John Croft in Lindbergh Field's new control tower, 1941. The article that accompanied this photo noted that Croft and another air-traffic controller were on loan from L.A. area airports. Here in San Diego, the men used strobe-light guns to bring in planes that had no radio equipment ("...they found the rudimentary facilities quite a change from their home bases.")

"The two towermen expect to return to their home bases as soon as the city can supply replacements."
