— The same day the editorial appeared, Newsome sent Robert Kittle, the author of the piece, an e-mail saying, "You should be ashamed of yourself and your paper, and you owe Mr. Aguirre a swift and public apology." Among other things, Newsome pointed out that he had given the material to the Union-Tribune more than a year earlier and nothing had appeared. He noted that at the same time he had written Aguirre in December 2004, he had written five other agencies that could have acted.

I e-mailed Kittle, asking if he planned to run Newsome's letter. His response: "We don't publish personal e-mail addressed to me." Next, Kittle adjusted his computer to screen out all e-mails from Newsome.

Says Shipione wryly about the U-T editorial, "It's easy to blame Mike for the loss of the Lindbergh baby, overeating, and every unfortunate event that occurs. The people doing the blaming should look to see if they could have prevented the problems."
