Cuba in Transition: A XXI Century Perspective on the Media and Economy
Two Cuban notables will discuss the changing economic and political climate of their country. Moderated by Reo Carr, executive editor of the San Diego Business Journal, this 90-minute program will provide an insiders perspective on Cuba. Broadcast Journalist Cristina Escobar Dominguez, best known for her leading role in the Cuban National Television coverage of President Obama’s historic visit, will speak to the role of the media in Cuba’s changing political climate.
According to Dominguez, media discourse is not keeping pace with societal appetite, and media production is not keeping pace with Cuba’s dynamic political and civic changes. Juan Triana Barros, professor of economics at the University of Havana, notes there are currently more than 313 reforms that will impact Cuban society -- most are aimed at the growing Cuban private sector. The creation of a stronger private sector provides optimism for younger generations, and Barros will touch on the challenges this presents for a culture with rapidly changing goals focused on materialism and economic status.
