Community Meeting on Wildland Fires
Deputy Fire Chief Jon Canavan will address wildland fires in a community meeting. Presented by the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps, the forum on wildland fires will also feature Bart Tuttle, PNEC board member, who will speak on evacuation strategies and "hardening the home to save it from fire."
Many view wildland fires as this area's main threat to lives and property. The combination of historic drought conditions, warmer temperatures, Santa Ana winds, and an excess of dried vegetation has made fire seasons progressively worse over the past 50 years. The May 2014 San Diego County wildfires burned 26,000 acres of land and cost close to $60 million, including $29.8 million in destruction or damage to private property and $27.9 million in the costs of firefighting, support, and environmental damage. The nonprofit PNEC works to complement the City of Poway Emergency Operations Plan through a grass roots communication network of neighbors. http://powaynec.com.
