Join San Diego City College Professor of Chicano Studies Virginia Escalante discuss the epic poem and foundational work of the Chicano movement by poet and Chicano Movement pioneer Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzáles. Written in 1967, Yo Soy Joaquin speaks of the struggles that Mexican-Americans have faced in trying to achieve economic justice and equal rights in the U.S., as well as to find an identity of being part of a hybrid mestizo society.
This presentation will take place in the Mary Hollis Clark Conference Center (ground floor) and is part of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, which supports the American public’s exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos.
