Invisible Geometry Opening Reception
Art is meant to be seen and discussed, so what does it mean when the art is invisible? Beth King creates minimalist sculptures out of industrial materials such as glass, steel, aluminum, or elastic fabric. While the sculptures are quite beautiful on their own, showcasing combinations of bent glass, flat glass, and glass which has been sandblasted, the true beauty lies behind the invisible natures of the materials. King's collection explores the physical strength and flexibility of glass by subjecting them to different forces of tension, compression, gravity, and projection. All custom hardware made by the artist herself are paramount in allowing the sculpture to maintain the desired configuration. King's works are in constant movement due to the ceaseless forces exerted naturally by each material's scientific qualities. Just as the mathematics of geometry, King's works are concerned with the nature of the shapes, sizes, relative positions, properties of space, and what they can teach viewers about the world. From the transparent quality of glass itself, to the metaphors and triggers of philosophical thought, invisible forces are made visible due to the decisions made by the artist.
