Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series: The Long Journey of Ramesses the Great
The return of Ramesses II to the Museum after an extended loan invites consideration of the long journey this 3200-year-old sculpture has made to arrive in San Diego. During this lecture, Dr. James Grebl, Associate Curator of Provenance and Research, will examine this journey along with the long “journey” that constituted the life of Egypt’s most important pharaoh.
Living to the remarkable age of 92, Ramesses ruled Egypt for 67 years and journeyed to all corners of his empire -- from Libya to Canaan and the Delta to Nubia -- leading a series of military campaigns and building projects which profoundly shaped his realm and contributed to his legendary fame.
This is the second lecture of the 2015 Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series. Happening the third Friday of each month, each lecture focuses on works on view and is followed by a docent-led tour.
