OMSurf's Meet the Legends
The Mission Beach Centennial celebration continues with the OMSurf “Meet the Legends” Longboard Surfing Contest.
The event marks the 89th anniversary of the first surfing contest in California that took place in Mission Beach.
All participants receive a T-shirt, and all proceeds go to support the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation.
The contest includes an Open Division for longboards that are longer than nine feet and don’t have a leash. The Classic Division is for longboards from 1969 or earlier. Both divisions have separate men’s and women’s competitions. There also is a special Menehune Division for kids 16 years of age and under.
Participants can use their own boards or a loaner courtesy of “Bird” Huffman, curator of the Surf Museum at Bay Park. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the contest starts at 8:30 a.m.
Several local surfing legends will be on hand, including Ocean Beach’s Marshal Malcolm, Mouse Robb, and Jim Richards. La Jolla’s Tommy Carrol, Woody Ekstrom, Ken Haygood, Jack Lounsberry, and Steve Straham will attend as well.
