Mule Hill: Field Notes
Jeff Smith 11:23 a.m., May 17
Presented by Tara Hu. Tara Hu is an artist who was raised and trained in Taipei, Taiwan. She has lived in the US since 1995. Using traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques, she brings a fresh and contemporary style to the pieces she creates, giving each work a unique and contemporary look, and making the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy speak to our modern world.
Although Tara utilizes many of the time-honored techniques of calligraphy, her favorite is derived from what is known as “Grass Style,” - a method which allows her to incorporate a great deal of freedom and movement into her work.
Beyond their simple elegance, the Chinese characters she paints have special spiritual resonance and are inspired by Buddhist texts like The Heart Sutra. Moreover, she describes the act of making her art as a form of meditation. It is her hope that her work will inspire, heal, and give strength to people simply by viewing it.
