Blue Bay Breakfast

Ahh. Fresh cool morning on the Embarcadero.

Big open terrace, red-and-white umbrellas, blue tables, and above all, that big blue bay spread out in front of us, sparkling in the mawnin' sunshine. Here though, it's nice and shady, this time of day.

Inside has murals of the scene outside

Natch, eating a big fat greasy breakfast that Celia hands me.

Country-fried steak

Surrounded by turistas. They're all talking about the heat wave back east, about last winter, being snowed in for months.

So you can't help but be a little proud of 'Diego, weathercasters' paradise. This is Hazelwoods' Deli (1355 North Harbor Drive), just south of the Star of India. You'd probably never notice, but this place has been open since 1995.

Breakfast (and they open at six) is "traditional," meaning breakfasts like this one, country-fried steak ($8.99), with eggs over easy, home fries, and a nice peppery gravy. No way California healthy, but hey, when you're on vacation from Minnesota, you probably want food just like home.

If you're a native, you don't really come here for the food. You come for the fresh sea breeze and to remember that we're a sea people. This big blue bay is why we're settled in this town.

Right now, swinging in from the ocean is a big Navy ship.

The red, white, and blue bunting around the prow tells you they're back from a deployment, probably WestPac. Maybe six months. Can see the couple of hundred sailors in white, manning the rail.

They've probably been dreaming all deployment long of getting back home, having breakfast at a place just like this.
