An on-demad ride-sharing company named Lyft has begun business in San Diego, according to publications bizjournals.com and techcrunch.com. The San Francisco-based company "lets customers find rides by using a smartphone app that also processes payments," says bizjournals.com. The company is already in business in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston. However, the Los Angeles transportation department served the company with a cease-and-desist order claiming the company is offering unlicensed taxi services. But Lyft and two other companies offering the same service say they have already been given the go-ahead by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Murphyjunk: The taxi companies are already frothing at the mouth. They screamed in L.A. and that resulted in the cease and desist order. Best, Don Bauder
