San Diego County's unemployment rate was 8.9% in December 2011, down from a revised 9.2% in November and below the 10.1% of a year earlier.

December's rate compares with an unadjusted rate of 10.9% for California and 8.3% for the nation, according to the California Employment Development Department.

In San Diego County, professional and business services had the greatest gain for December, adding 1900 jobs, while professional, scientific and technical services added 1200.

Local jobs were up 4100 over the month and 26,900 from a year ago.
