State Route 54 near Briarwood Road, Bonita
March 16, 11:45 p.m.
California Highway Patrol officers, Sheriff’s deputies, and paramedics responded to a report of a vehicle roll-over on eastbound State Route 54, east of Briarwood Road in the community of Bonita.
Once on the scene, law enforcement officials discovered that “the reported driver of the vehicle had sustained at least one gunshot wound,” according to Lt. Dennis Brugos of the Sheriff’s Department.
This victim, and another male occupant, were transferred to a local hospital. Their names have not been released. The driver required surgery.
Two other male occupants, however, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office identified them on March 18 as Donnell Eric Davis Jr., 15, of San Diego, and Brandon Nicholas Johnson, 16, of Lemon Grove.
This is what seems to have happened:
The vehicle and its four male occupants, all teenagers from Lincoln High, were traveling eastbound on SR-54 when several shots were fired at their vehicle by another car traveling in the same direction.
The driver was hit by a bullet and lost control of the car. The car struck a concrete barrier at a high speed and the car rolled over.
“There are no suspects,” says Brugos. It is unknown at this time if this was a random road shooting or if the young men were targeted.
