  2. I have to agree with sdsportsfan the game was a thriller... with passing records set by St. Mary's, Cathedral's special teams and defensive secondary was suspect.

Tyler Gaffney continued his dominance on the field to the point of near exhaustion which may have been a factor in his fumble turnover. But Gaffney made up for it later with a half back pass back to Senior QB Parker Hipp on a 4th and 11 play sustaining the Cathedral drive. Later Gaffney broke loose on one of his signature runs scoring the go-ahead touchdown.

I believe each team only punted once in the entire game, an indicator that both defensive units had difficulties controlling the offense. But when it came time to step it up with St. Mary's driving down the field late in the 4th quarter, the Cathedral defensive unit decided enough was enough and held St. Mary's on a fourth down play, stopping their drive to a winning score.

In the end it turned out the team that held the ball at the end of the game won it, as St. Mary's was unable to stop Cathedral in the final two minutes thus sealing its position as Division II runner up.

Congratulation to the Cathedral Players, Coaches and staff. A perfect 14-0 season, and 2008 Division II CIF State Champions.

  3. Just sitting up here in NorCal watching the game on TV, and Cathedral Catholic certainly made me a "believer". Congratulations. And Tyler Gaffney, wow, awesome performance. Please, please, consider going Cardinal, being a part of Stanford will be something you will never ever regret.

  4. More congratulations go to Tyler Gaffney!

Gaffney was awarded the KUSI Prep Pigskin Report "Silver Pigskin" award for 2008.

Presented at an award Gala at the San Diego Hall of Champions, this award signifies his selection as the "Prep Player of the Year" in San Diego county.

Others reveiving votes in this award process (in order of their finish) were Robbie Rouse (Madison), Jordan Wynn (Oceanside), Tate Forcier (Scripps Ranch), and James Johnson (Valley Center)....all very worthy athletes!

Then....if that wasn't enough....he went out Saturday afternoon and demonstrated why he was acknowledged with this award.

Congratulations to all the athletes considered for this years Silver Pigskin Award!
