We can go on and on about Edinson Volquez, but it won’t do a bit of good. Yes, he gave up some runs on Tuesday, as the Padres fell to the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-2. He’s also been brilliant in other starts this season.

Buddy Black wasn’t so completely disappointed in the performance of Volquez as much as he was complimentary of Cardinals hitting. “The first three innings he pitched extremely well. They just strung some hits together there in the [fifth inning],” manager Buddy Black said during the post-game press conference.

Edinson’s pitches move and when he’s on, the ball begins on the plate and moves slightly off before it enters the zone. Tuesday, in many instances, the ball started off of the plate and moved over it, which provided Cardinals hitters with some opportunities.

Volquez went six innings giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five. He threw 62 strikes from 87 pitches which is an excellent ball-to-strike ratio as Buddy Black pointed out after the game.

Anthony Bass came in to relieve Volquez and after a 1-2-3 seventh inning, he loaded the bases in the eighth. With one out, Daniel Descalso hit a grand slam home run and blew the game open and out of reach of the Padres.

The Cardinals tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning, and the Padres tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth but could only manage one run as Alexi Amarista ended the game by grounding into a double-play.

Jedd Gyorko continues to swing the bat well, getting three more hits on Tuesday to raise his average to .278 in his rookie season, which leads the league among rookies. Gyorko also leads all rookies in total hits, runs scored, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.

Notes:

Clayton Richard continued his rehab on Tuesday, getting a start for the AAA Tucson Padres in Omaha against the Storm Chasers. Richard went six innings and gave up two runs on six hits with no walks, while striking out four. Expect a decision sometime on Thursday or Friday concerning Clayton’s return to the big club.

Wednesday, the Cardinals and Padres will play the rubber game of the three game series. The Padres will feature Burch Smith (0-0, 15.63) against Tyler Lyons, who will be making his major league debut for the Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM PDST on radio 1090 AM and televised on Fox Sports San Diego.

(Clever headline here, much? Both pithy and clever.)
