Lori Pfeiler, long-time Escondido mayor who did not attempt to get another term this year, has been assessed a $200 penalty by the state's Fair Political Practices Commission. She failed to report transportation on a private plane and lodging allegedly from Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation in November of last year. Pfeiler has long pushed pro sports for Escondido, so there is some skepticism about this assessment. She was given a $375 seat in a box at the Chargers-Denver Broncos game and a $50 ride from the airport to the hotel. After the game, she dined with Chargers chief executive Dean Spanos and his wife. Spanos paid $95 for her meal. Before the FPPC action, one critic said the gifts came from the Chargers and should have been reported as such. She said the gifts came from Palomar Pomerado.

The FPPC's investigation probably cost more than five times the penalty. Best, Don Bauder

Don, you describe her as the mayor who did not attempt to get another term. In fact, she decided at the last minute to stay on the city council, and ran for a contested seat to that body. She just couldn't stay away! Sadly, for her, she lost to a perennial office-holder and councilman, Ed Gallo. If there is some implication in this (there is!) for this minor league baseball park, her loss is going to bury it even faster than reality will. The current four members are now going to have to decide how to fill the empty seat resulting from Abed's election as mayor. The Light News today weighed in with an editorial opinion that an election was called for. "Let the people decide", the paper intoned. (There was no mention of having the people decide about the ballpark.) The U-T has been for years--decades--in favor of allowing elected bodies to appoint members to vacant seats. In this case, all four members describe themselves as "fiscal conservatives", although that is subject to disagreement. So, why should those four "conservatives" not appoint a fellow conservative? Why is the News now supporting a costly election? Who is John Galt?

Yes, she ran for the council and lost. I knew that and didn't put it in. As to the ill-planned ballpark, my guess is that common sense will prevail and Escondido won't fall for this scam. Clearly, the city can't afford it. It will not stimulate development and will probably be a complete flop in attracting fans after the initial glow wears off. Best, Don Bauder

Hay Ex- Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler and PPH Foundation,

Shouldn’t the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation raffled off the trip to raise money for Foundation??? And / Or “The Hospital of the Future” instead of taking $25 dollars a paycheck from my neighbor to raise money.

I know she is not going to donate any more money to the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation anymore.

I hope nobody donates any more money to the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation if this is how they are going to waste their resources.

Yes, but was she REALLY a guest of the Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation, as claimed? Best, Don Bauder
