County Unemployment Surges to 8.6% in January; Jobs Down 28,300 in Month

The San Diego County unemployment rate jumped to 8.6% in January from a revised 7.5% in December and 5.1% a year earlier. The state's rate is 10.6% and the nation's 8.5%. The county lost 28,300 jobs, or 2.2%, in the month, according to the state Employment Development Department. Jobs in food services and drinking places declined 3.8 percent in the month, while employment services dropped 6.3 percent. Over a full year (compared with January of last year), construction jobs dropped 12.8 percent, auto dealers and parts jobs declined 11.8% and department store employment 11.4%. The report was originally to have been released last Friday.



It will zoom to 35% by 2010.

The nation's unemployment rate bolted to 8.1 percent in February, the highest since late 1983, as cost-cutting employers slashed 651,000 jobs amid a deepening recession. (According to a story from the AP today).
