Steven Soderbergh reads The Big Screen!
Matthew Lickona 1:14 p.m., May 24
Following the hugely successful rollout of the new Superman logo - it's darker! it's edgier! no wait, it's both! - Warner Bros. has released some prototype sketches from the first of its planned Post-Nolan Batman films, due for release in 2017. "Batman is the ultimate expression of the One Percent," reads the press release. "Straight white middle-aged male, hugely wealthy, head of a major corporation, absolutely comfortable violating the civil rights of his fellow citizens in pursuit of some abstract notion of justice, forever playing the hero by solving problems that are largely of his own invention. (Seriously, would the Joker ever have come around if there wasn't a Batman to antagonize?) In The Dark Knight of the Soul, Batman will be forced to face the moral implications of his actions, first with regards to race...
White Power Batman meets Black Power Batman
...and then with regard to the great civil rights struggle of our time:
Pride Batman
Batman: Prouder Still
Sean Penn is in talks to star, and John Waters has expressed an interest in directing. All in all, it should be the most personal, introspective, and yet also wildly fabulous Batman movie yet!"
[no, not really.]
