Short Takes: Weekend
Sadly, this is not a remastered reissue of Godard's masterwork. A semi-closeted lifeguard and an art student meet in a bar and spend a weekend together having sex and swapping war wounds. One of writer, director Andrew Haigh’s characters bemoans the fact his upcoming art exhibition will be a “gays only” affair. (“Straights won’t come because it has nothing to do with their world.”) Instead of following his own advice and offering up a shared experience, Haigh delivers yet another standard-issue gay romantic drama. The one bit of eternal knowledge to be gleaned: semen and soap suds bear a remarkable similarity when placed in ones naval. Is this gay mumblecore? The thick British accents render at least one-third of the film's dialog unintelligible. You may want to wait and watch it on DVD with the help of closed-captioning. With: Tom Cullen and Chris New.
