Once again truth is stranger than fiction. Walmart has coveted a spot along the coastal strip for a long time. It was thwarted by San Marcos when it wanted to locate off Rancho Santa Fe Road. Carlsbad wanted nothing to do with big box retail when it was ruled by Mayor-For-Life "Big Bad Bud" Lewis. Now Walmart will replace that Expo Design Center (erroneously called Home Expo in the U-T) and has avoided virtually all the usual opposition and scrutiny. The city council can express regret at the fact that it could not stop this arrival. Secretly the members are highly pleased because this will bring in sales tax dollars in abundance.
I loved Expo Design Centers...they actually had a fair number of products manufactured in the USA. I miss them. Still a long-time holder of HD stock, though unhappy with the quality of many of their goods these days.
I've been a very long time holder of HD stock, which was VERY good to me. But I never really liked the HD stores, and still don't. Stilts to reach the up-out-of-reach merchandise, anyone? And I'm not short. Crumbum employees too often.
