The operator of Boxer Rescue of San Diego was taken into custody March 10 on charges of animal cruelty and neglect.
According to a county press release, animal control officers raided the home of Alice Via on Moreno Avenue in Lakeside and found 60 dogs in crates one on top of the other throughout the house. An unnamed source told officers that the dogs were let out just once a day.
The dogs had skin conditions, upper respiratory disease, and other illnesses. Most had injuries to their feet and noses from trying to claw their way out of the crates.
After being evaluated by veterinary staff, the animals will be transported to county animal shelters in Carlsbad, Bonita and San Diego, but will not be available for adoption until after the investigation is over.
An inside source was disappointed to discover the dogs were being treated badly. She described Via as "a hoarder."
