Gay blues
Whoever "BluesMan59" is, he sure seems to have a pretty well maintained little black book of Which Bluesman is Gay. I guess someone has to keep tabs, right Mr. 59? The fact is most people have never heard of Amos Milburn. And Charles Brown, who died 14 years ago, has no mention of him being gay in his Wikipedia bio. I think Earl's point is that blues is famous for being very macho male, and chasing women in lyrics and image. Don't think Charles Brown ever wanted it to be known that he was gay. Another point is, times have changed. Earl definitely sings legitimate blues and he represents the U.S. a lot in Europe and now he's getting married to another man so that is pretty big news. I guarantee if Earl agreed, the national press would love to cover this. Maybe he isn't pursuing it out of the wishes of his soon-to-be husband. What the hell, it might even make a good movie. Keep in mind, BluesMan59 is the same guy who told us Little Richard was a blues singer. Sure rock came out of the blues. And Little Richard was one of the people who created rock. And clearly he drew from the blues. But Little Richard was not a blues singer any more than Elvis was a country singer or Liberace was a classical artist.— August 17, 2013 4:05 p.m.
Gay blues
No one would consider Little Richard a blues singer. Never really heard that one before. It was this new, wild, off-center devil's music called rock and roll that gave outsiders like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and to a lesser extent Johnny Cash and Screamin Jay Hawkins a platform to be weird, wild and wooly (Cash wasn't that weird and Screamin' Jay wasn't that big). Don't think John Lee Hooker wore a lot of eyeliner. Don't think Muddy Waters did a lot of sashaying on stage. Should Earl Thomas have mentioned Charles Brown? Maybe. But I don't think Charles Brown showed up on the mass media or pop culture radar that much. Blues purists will remember him, and blues scholars may know he was gay. Other than that, don't know if he moved the needle that much. But if you think Little Richard is a blues man I have some late breaking news for you: Paul Lynde was NOT a member of the Magnificent Seven.— August 16, 2013 4:32 p.m.
Gay blues
I think Earl was talking about bluesmen. With all due respect, I don't think a jazz pianist is the same thing as a blues artist.— August 15, 2013 5:27 p.m.
Drummer found dead
I was wondering about all the hate in the earlier posts so I did some research.I asked other bands about Purple Church. I found out that Michael Prince was a much loved, stand up guy, but that the guys he played with are known as scum cockroaches by other bands.— August 10, 2013 7:41 p.m.

Exactly! That was the problem. This article is incomplete. What the hell happened?— August 8, 2013 5:06 p.m.
Drummer found dead
Dude, that is how they wanted to portray themselves. They used that term to describe their genre just like trash metal or speed metal. There is no conspiracy here. Youre suggesting that if a band calls themselves speed metal they do speed. Come on man. You seem a little sensitive.— August 8, 2013 4:36 p.m.

"Sleaze metal" is how the band described themselves. It would be good to know how long it took the band to return the $300. I guess that Gypsy Hawk band would know. Maybe they will say. But it doesn't look like Purple Church even needed to return it. It was given to them. It was the bar's fault not Purple Church's. I don't think Purple Church should get any grief for that.— August 8, 2013 3:48 p.m.
Drummer found dead
What I meant was it was awful he died.— August 8, 2013 2:33 p.m.
Drummer found dead
Wow why are these people getting so worked up. The guy wanted to get a quote from some people and they didn't want to give a quote. But so what? That doesn't mean that this isn't a story or that he shouldn't write it. The guy is dead. The only negative part in the article was that the guy died. I don't know for sure but I don't think the writer caused the death. He is just reporting it. He apparently wrote about his band in 2011, then he dies at 25. So why shouldn't he do the story in a respectful way. It really is awful but why all the outrage. This was a legitimate news story about the san diego music scene. From what I can tell this is what this section is. Attacking the writer will not bring him back. News is news. This wasn't supposed to be a tribute. Its a news story. I don't see the disrespect.— August 8, 2013 2:31 p.m.
Burning of Rome's Pleasing and Strange New Disc
why did no one reply to this? Does Burning of Rome not matter any more? I thought they were going to be huge.— August 9, 2012 8:05 p.m.
