Car-Smashing Criminals Caught (on Video) in Mira Mesa
I really do not understand the mental process that would think that it's safe to leave a "Nook" in your car...especially a car parked on a public street. I'm sure Kim feels violated by the theft and I do feel badly for her but how does one not understand that leaving anything in your car in one of the high crime areas of the city (check the stats for Mira Mesa) is not adding to the problem. I worked on a campaign along with a police officer that took his own time to print and pass out flyers letting residents know what precautions to take to avoid having your car broken into. Visduh pretty much stated what the flyer said. It's really common sense...leave nothing in your car of value. Residents that do are a liability to other residents living in the area by continually attracting thieves. Then there is the "must have it at any cost/cause and affect be dammed" person who deliberately leaves high value items to be stolen or, worse yet, file false police reports so their parents or insurance companies will pay for the latest version of some gadget.— November 13, 2012 12:23 p.m.
Accounting Group Disciplines Former City Auditor
Calderon was also the auditing firm contracted by the San Diego Housing Commission which, at the time, was funded by federal, state and CDBG programs. There's another can of worms that's yet to be opened.— September 8, 2010 8:52 p.m.

refriedgringo and Pistol Pete - Just so I'm clear on where your heads are - what mental dysfunction have you been diagnosed with? This is a serious inquiry because you both comment regularly and I want to be able to know that I'm not wasting my time since the Reader doesn't edit comments. One commentor uses words of "corruption" and "injustice" because someone went to ANOTHER state; broke THEIR law and had to pay a fine. The other one advocates murder just so he can smoke pot. A weed has more importance than a life. By the way, "WE THE PEOPLE" also includes those of us who don't care what illegal or self-destructive behaviour you do as long as you (and any other consenting adults) keep it within your four walls. I appreciated that Mr. Graham's recounting of his experience in Arizona was informative, a "heads up" for others and respectful to Arizona's process. I'm sure Mr. Graham is intelligent enough to know that it's not all about the money for Arizona. Mr. Graham's approach might make me vote for legalizing the purchase of marijuana even though I don't smoke - refried gringo's and Pistol Pete's would not.— January 21, 2010 1:08 p.m.
Laid-Off U-T Workers Told to Leave Friday, Will Be Paid until July 6
Does anyone know what operations are left at the corporate office (Copley Press) in La Jolla? Won't there be layoffs there too? What's left for the La Jolla employees to do - just manage David's money?— May 27, 2009 6:24 p.m.
Sierra Pacific
We've enjoyed early dinners more than once here for special occasions and holidays in a very nice atmosphere overlooking the yacht harbor. The American fare (steak, seafood and poultry) is very good, well presented and served in generous portions. The staff is attentive and friendly.— May 1, 2009 5:53 p.m.

Response to Tina: My logic and intellectual honesty do me quite well, thank you. I'm not the one taking grant money for the pretense of a computer science project and using it for a personal/political agenda. It would be interesting to see what the universities that approved the grants would say about all this. Oh, and you might want to recheck your accuracy since you describe yourself as a "writer". You mentioned Citybeat in two different paragraphs - that would be twice not once. And your stating that Citybeat scooped this four months ago while this is still an ongoing project has relevance to the article today because??? Still looks like shilling to me. Final suggestion - retrack your nails (fake or otherwise) and stop the drama. You're just looking for fights with every media outlet and person that doesn't make you their priority. You are loved but not unconditionally, only children get that kind; it's time to grow up and play nice.— March 30, 2009 12:41 a.m.

What about the word "NO" is so hard to grasp. A journalist can and should refuse any specific request from the subject of the article regardless of what that request signifies. There is no scenerio where letting the subject of a story tell the journalist what to write is acceptable. Note to Tina: Stop shilling for City Beat by demeaning other journalists and publications. City Beat's whole business model is based on how controversial it can be to acquire readership. There's not enough newsprint in the northwest for their "journalists" to apologize to all who they have intentionally disrespected. And then there're your words - "dumb", "cowardly", and "jackass" used towards Grimm. If you're an example of how the transgender community wants to dialogue...Good luck.— March 28, 2009 4:20 p.m.

This is as much a misuse of taypayer dollars at this end of the cultural spectrum as giving bonuses to AIG execs are at the other end. The real world is tough - no doubt. It may explain the proliferation of narcissistic/controlling behaviors and experimentation in the virtual world may seem important to some other than for escapism. But let's leave it to the private sector to fund it. Although, Cardenas' gender identity, as part of this article on the virtual experiment, did open the conversation on transgendering, his attitude towards the process of transgendering may do more of a disservice to those who could use the funding and want to complete the whole process. It's interesting that some readers expect Grimm to accept to be told what to write (be used) to promote Cardenas' admitted political agenda and see Grimm's respectful refusal as disparaging to Cardenas. Regardless of the agenda, no author should yield to such a request. There will always be those looking for offense because they just want to be in an offended frame of mind. Perhaps stepping out of your bubble and engaging society with civility as whoever or whatever you choose to be; as a responsibly functioning member of society without wasting other peoples' money; and refrain from denouncing anyone who doesn't subscribe to your idea of what is culturally relevant as not being enlightened or intolerant would do more for the transgender community. A more indepth article about transgenders would also be helpful.— March 26, 2009 5:58 p.m.
Abortionist Bertha Bugarin heads to jail
If this article upsets you and you are annoyed at "The Reader" for publishing this article and are criticizing the writer's style of reporting I would like to say - Don't shoot the messenger. It reads like a police blotter and it should since the people involved were breaking laws. I repeat - they were breaking laws. Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, I would think that having the names of these doctors would be valuable so that you might not want to use them if they were to be practicing in another area of medicine or back at abortion clinics. "The Reader" may not have been able to help these women but at least they cared enough to tell their story unlike the doctors who exploited them and, because the women were minorities and low-income, they weren't worth being treated humanely. By "The Reader" outing these doctors, they may be saving some women today. As for bias...if the doctors and clinic employees have been sanctioned by the state board and the courts, I'm not sure what other spin you'd want to see to make their actions be acceptable. I suggest this article be read without politics; only with humanity. I regret my abortion.— February 21, 2009 5:30 p.m.
For 2010, 2011, and 2012 seasons, San Diego Opera cuts back to four operas instead of the usual five
Very accurate observation, Don. I grew up in a "barrio" of Los Angeles in, what would be considered today, a "very low income" family. I attended a public school kindergarten class and had a wonderful, grandmotherly, teacher that sat us in a circle and had us listen to classical records. But she didn't just play them, she explained the different instruments and how they told the stories in the songs. Her passion for the music made us want to hear it and learn more about it. At home, I heard Mexican Country Western so, were it not for Mrs. Johnson, I might never have been exposed to serious music. I hope that there are more teachers like Mrs. Johnson out there.— February 12, 2009 2:39 p.m.
