The Kid with a Bike was the critic's top favorite during his tenure.
I was sad when Duncan left the column. But your replacing him eased the loss. I've appreciated your reviews and knowledge of film. I like Matthew, John and Scott but I hope there will be an outlet somewhere for future reviews from you, if you so desire, and that you will let us know. Good luck.— June 13, 2012 7:32 p.m.
Follow the Talent
At some point one has enough information about something to make a valid assumption. As a liberal, I find the extreme right wing and those who get their information from fox and AM talk radio a toxic combination of the ignorant and dangerous. I don't hear any voices from moderate republicans. Look at the republican presidential nominees. The democrats are the moderate republicans from 30 years ago. I couldn't imagine voting for any repulican at this point. I don't feel this makes me close minded. Part of the problem today is the assumption that every single issue has two sides that are worthy of presenting. Like evolution vs. intelligent design. Global warming. At what point do you say I have enough evidence to make an informed decision or that you've heard enough from the other side?— February 19, 2012 11:37 a.m.
So Long
I knew this day would have to come. My Thursdays will never be the same. Your reviews were always interesting and insightful. I would especially get a kick from reading a black dot review while on the next page an ad for the same movie would have the usual thumbs up from Roger Ebert, the "one hell of a thrill ride" from Peter Travers, and the like. And then the letters to the Reader asking for a different critic from the same pool. I hope they don't get their wish. I've made a point to see your 3 star and higher reviewed movies and taken a printout of your 4 and 5 star reviews into Kensington video (and use it with, yes, netflix.) I know I speak for many when I say I hope there will be a place where you will post your thoughts/reviews on upcoming films that you choose to see and recommend. Either through the Reader site or somewhere else. Thank you Mr. Shepherd— November 14, 2010 10:10 a.m.
Day-by-day slog for a San Diego job
Good luck Jason. Enjoyed the story. Not sure if I caught where you work. Can you tell us what it rhymes with? : )— June 17, 2010 11:38 a.m.
Keep the Tip!
In Europe they will let you sit for hours after the meal without bringing the check. It almost seems rude to ask for it. It's nice to sit and enjoy the experience for a while if you're a tourist but there are other things you would like to see and time is limited and you almost seem the ugly American who cannot appreciate the European way if you ask for the check.— June 29, 2009 1:04 a.m.
BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
I grew up listening to the ABC album and it is still one of my favorites. Granted the music was written and played by other top notch people. But for me, he never topped those early J5 songs and his later stuff contains those "hiccup" vocals that drive me nuts. It is possible he committed some terrible acts. Perhaps not. We'll never know. Still I'm surprised that I'm feeling a bit sadder than I would expect. Whatever one might feel about him, he was one of the very few entertainers that commanded such a large worldwide audience at the height of his popularity and gave millions upon millions joy. One my faves by him is "I'll Be There." Excellent singing, particularly in the fading title phrases. Also sorry abut Farrah. While in my hormone infested teens I could have killed someone for a chance to be with her, I always preferred Jaclyn Smith and some others from the late 70's shows. I hope they both went peacefully.— June 25, 2009 7:34 p.m.

Thank you. I made 50 cents.— June 25, 2009 7:21 p.m.

Thanks SD...had wisdom teeth pulled recently and jaw is aching. Been laying low for a while. Hope everyone didn't pile on Josh too bad. : )— June 25, 2009 1:47 a.m.

Conspiracy Theories
I'm familiar with CC though I haven't read it. i remember him debating others on tv when the book came out. I'm also familiar with a lot of the anti conspriracies with JFK. I know the path past the schoolbook depot was the day before (supposedly)and that LHO took large long package to work that day. While I've changed my opinion on the magic bullet theory (from impossible to practically impossible) due to info that jfk and conneley weren't lined up like people said, it is still so far from realistic that the one shot did the damage and ended up on a stretcher in near pristine condition. Plus Oswald's history of easy access to Russia and then back here at the height of the cold war, his association with ruby and their mutual crime friends,etc....I'm sure Posner deals with this in his book and I'll give it a look. But I'm familiar with a lot of the conspiracies and they're well researched and not out there. If I do read it, please let the cow live. : )— June 16, 2009 9:39 p.m.
