Fred Sainz, the key to Mayor Jerry Sanders’s door
Would be nice to see some of those intimidated by Sainz actually challenge him and see what that worm is really made of.— May 28, 2008 8:13 p.m.
How San Diego's pension debt ballooned
For those who want to defend Sanders' "recovery", consider just how important Sanders is to San Diego developers. They sure are making no secret about it. Look around at any and every development site of any note. They all have those Sanders reelection banners fully displayed like flags of patriotism on the jobsites' temporary fencing. One would not even have to look at the books or examine the public record. The friends you keep and who keep you speaks volumes. Unfortunately, the average San Diego voter is easily wooed into aligning with the perceived most popular candidate and will assess such by these in-your-face banner assaults. On the bright side possibly, turn out for June elections may exclude many of the more casual and petty voters. And Don, loved your metaphor for Development Services in response #10: spot on and concise.— May 27, 2008 1:34 a.m.
Less Dense, Fewer Homeless, More Sky
San Diego is bad neighbor hell. That dawned on me recently. I also came to San Diego in the early 80s from the northeastern urban sprawl. Americans generally require more personal space than folks in other parts of our planet. However, this is extremized here. If you look at someone in the face and briefly smile in acknowledgement of their presence (something very normal elsewhere) you get a "Do I know you?" look with an attendant assumption that you are either trying to pick them up or are psychotic. I see my neighbors in the limited window when their garage door happens to be up. As depressing as that communal detachment is, what's worse is the types of neighbors I have noted from the limited exposures. It seems San Diego is a magnet for self-absorbed, plasticene, and parasitically opportunistic individuals.— May 9, 2008 10:33 a.m.
Will Angelenos, Zonies stay away from San Diego this year?
Additionally, to integrate the treated water better, I'd like to see a full infrastructure set up and require developers of X number or more unit developments to plumb with a separate feed to toilets. It is a horrendous waste to be flushing with potable water. Treated sewage is perfectly safe for toilets and lawn irrigation. We need to get much more water smart here.— May 9, 2008 2:39 a.m.
Will and I got married for the extra $1452 Navy pay
Plenty of people have, in the past and present, gotten married for financial reasons. Some don't marry similarly out of financial concerns. Divorce too. Marriage to the government is a legal contract. They entered into such a contract and it should have been respected by the military. Marriage as an emotional and procreative bond is for the churches and similar, which have zero standing in government and military affairs. Yes, they took advantage of the system but so do many taxpayers who choose to either file separately or jointly based on the bottom line.— May 8, 2008 8:59 p.m.
Straight up
I'd love to hear what Bible-bangers who carry the flag on this issue would say about banning post-menopausal or infertile women from getting married too, as they clearly cannot be fruitful and multiply.....unless immaculate conception is in the cards.— May 8, 2008 8:41 p.m.
Indian givers
Never was quite sure why there is so much state and county politics in local Indian affairs in light of the Indian Commerce Act (article 1, section 8, clause 3), which delegates responsibility to Congress for most economic activity, at least as a regulary agent.— May 8, 2008 8:36 p.m.
Will Angelenos, Zonies stay away from San Diego this year?
We could have a good piece of the European spending if we had a proper airport with a long runway. Perhaps someday we can get Miramar and add on real estate when the cap off the adjacent landfill. But it will more likely come down to handing money to friends, as always. The ballpark, for instance, would have been ideally located in the old General Dynamics space in Kearny Mesa. Great highway access, central location, lots of potential parking, fantastic for local retail businesses, and low impact on residential neighborhoods. Instead, they stuck it downtown and probably on properties accumulated by someone friendly to City Hall.— May 8, 2008 8:28 p.m.
