Suit charges Bridgepoint cooked books
Education and the profit motive are like electricity and water. They don't mix.— February 13, 2016 7:52 a.m.
Qualcomm executives sued
The priorities for large corporations in the country are as follows: C-level management->shareholders->customers->employees They really should be: customers->employees->shareholders->C-level management— February 6, 2016 11:23 a.m.
Qualcomm executives sued
Hopefully, the H-1B system is reformed so that immigrants are free to quit and gain employment with a different employer with a 6 month grace period. If the H-1B worker is abused under this reform, they can quit and get a job elsewhere.— February 6, 2016 11:20 a.m.
Have some unemployment dip with that holiday
I take the low unemployment rate with a grain of salt. There are still lots of people who want a job out there in the nooks and crannies. The labor market in San Diego is an employer's market even at the low 4.7% unemployment rate. A true employee's market hasn't been seen since 1999. BTW: Qualcomm just filed a warn act notice for 32 additional layoffs. I suspect that Qualcomm will be letting go of more employees in the next few years in San Diego as price pressure forces them to move R&D overseas.— January 23, 2016 12:09 p.m.
Bright and dim views of San Diego job market
For electronics engineers, San Diego's job market is one of the worst performing regions. Qualcomm laid off a bunch of engineers in November of 2015. The EE market is saturated, and it will take 18-24 months for this to correct. If Qualcomm has more layoffs, then it could take even longer than this.— January 5, 2016 11:14 a.m.
Rooftop solar wins one!
The two options I see are the US house/senate and the courts. The former is unlikely unless we get a republican president, and the republicans keep control of the house and senate. The latter is more likely in the near term. They'll shop for a judge to issue a ruling to cast the new rules aside. One final note: The outcome would have been the opposite if Peevey was still heading the PUC. It's a good thing he is gone.— December 16, 2015 9:56 a.m.
Lame jobs, though
I'm calling B.S. on this. There are a lot of hard working Americans who *do* put in extra hours to get the job done when it is required. We just don't like being taken advantage of with chronic overtime. We prefer to work to live and not live to work. As for being overpaid, what that mean someone who lives below their means needs to be paid just enough so that can't save for retirement (or to say F.U. to employers such as yourself) ? This is what most employers want as it puts them in a position of strength. No thanks. I have enough savings and investments where I don't need to work, so I'll be very choosy about who I'll work for. If the job doesn't have a good working environment and pays peanuts, maybe that job should go unfilled until time ends.— November 21, 2015 2:40 p.m.
Handicap placard abusers on notice
This is all fine and good, but it doesn't address the elephant in the room: The fraudulent issue of blue handicap permits. These are too easy for people to get. All they need to do is find the right doctor to sign off on the request for a placard. The state of California needs to clamp down hard on this by doing the following: 1. A doctor on the state payroll should vet all requests for a placard, and if necessary call the person requesting the placard in for an exam. 2. A re-examination and re-application should be required every 5 years. No exceptions. 3. If you are caught applying for a placard or the doctor is caught, the doctor and/or the patient need to be referred to the district attorney for prosecution.— October 16, 2015 10:58 a.m.
Gov. Brown vetoes bills to reform utilities commission
Maybe we should change that custom, and if that fails, then submit an initiative (costs $2K now). What would really be interesting is to use something like Kickstarter to sponsor initiatives and gather signatures.— October 11, 2015 11:17 a.m.
Solar power vs. SDG&E
In the future, the only thing the utilities will be in business for is transporting power, and controlling power flow. Rooftop solar combined with local energy storage and a smart grid will make this happen. If the utilities overreach, then what we will have is a lot of people going off-grid and cutting the utilities out of the picture. If they play this correctly, then they will serve a purpose in the future. In my opinion, the investor-owned Utility companies have a conflict of interest. They need to deliver a profit to their shareholders (and this is viewed as the only reason they are allowed to exist), yet they are responsible for a lot of the things we take for granted in a modern society. Maybe we should convert the utility companies from a 'C' corporation to a 'B' or benefit corporation so that profit is not the only motive.— October 2, 2015 9:25 a.m.
