Even the rich can complain about high rents
People who lean conservative tend to think that raising the minimum wage results in fewer jobs. (I don't subscribe to this, for other reasons which would take too much space to put here.) However, I do think that greedy landlords will try to raise rents agressively in the next few years as we tend towards the $15.00/hr minimum wage in order to cash in on the bonanza. You see, there are reasons why there are people making minimum wage... In addition to a lot of young people starting out, there are also a lot of people who for one reason or another are vulnerable to being taken advantage of by others. These people are just not in a position to push back against landlords, they just aren't wired for it.... This brings us finally to the problem in San Diego with the lack of affordable housing. With market rates for rent going out of the affordable zone, what happens to those trapped on the low end of the wage scale? Do they live like sardines in a tin?— July 29, 2016 6:05 p.m.
Rent control protest in O.B.
I see you are at it again Jnlohr. Not all people are going to be able to own property, or even rental property in this country. (If everyone did, then there would be no need for landlords) Maybe you should show a little more empathy for those who are less fortunate than yourself. Renting housing unit means that the tenant don't have to worry about taxes and maintenance. It should be baked into the monthly rent. If you can't make a profit on your rental units, then get out of the business! Disclaimer: I own a rental property, so I'm aware of what it takes to be a landlord. Personal attacks on tenants complaining about rent control and the poor conditions of rental units are not my modus operandi.— June 7, 2016 9:06 a.m.
Troubled Bridgepoint runs into GI Bill problems
Although the free market is good for a lot of industries. Education and healthcare should be run by nonprofit entities as the profit motive colors the outcomes in both cases.— May 30, 2016 4:03 p.m.
County unemployment rate keeps falling
As usual, mostly McJobs were created (Manufacturing lost 1200 jobs). Tourism does not pay enough to live decently in San Diego. Meanwhile, companies like Qualcomm are laying people off, and hiring H-1B's to replace them. The 4.7% unemployment rate in San Diego is really meaningless as it is the based U-3 rate, and not the natural U-6 rate. In the US right now there is a pool of people who are basically unemployable in the eyes of employers. The labor participation rate is 62.8% for April 2016, the lowest since the 70's. Until the leadership in this country decides to put the citizens ahead of the Corporate/Capital class when it comes to employment, these shenanigans will continue.— May 21, 2016 1:08 p.m.
Qualcomm pays half the tax it should owe
As long as deep pocketed special interests do the nominating of the candidates, this will continue. We need root and branch reform at the federal level (And a few constitutional amendments to boot). Until this is done, the charade will continue. Under the current system there's nothing the voters can do about it. Voting candidates out every election cycle does not work, as the candidates are pre-vetted by the powerful interests. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"— April 16, 2016 1:17 p.m.
Local unemployment stays at 4.7 percent
Mostly low wage jobs, regrettably. Try finding a job as an electronics engineer in this town-- It's darn near impossible if you are over 50! It is pretty tough for us right now. Go outside San Diego, or even better outside California and the job markets are so much stronger. It is very expensive to live in San Diego, and companies do not want to move here and pay the high salaries. We may become a tourist town again with lots of low wage jobs, and no tech industry unless something is done to address the high cost of living here.— April 15, 2016 1:44 p.m.
Divide is deep between voters and nonvoters
This is nothing new. It is the American way of doing things. If you don't get off your butt and register to vote, then you don't get to participate in our representative democracy. The powers that be want to make it so that some effort by a citizen has to be expended to vote. This serves to filter out low-income people who have more pressing issues in their lives to address than taking the time to register to vote. A much better system is automatic registration coupled with fines for not voting. In a democracy, it is the duty of all citizens to vote and serve on juries. We should also let most felons vote, as there is widespread disfranchisement in this country.— April 8, 2016 7:57 a.m.
Qualcomm engineers get axed, then train foreign replacements
Is this country really a representative democracy, or is it a plutocracy? A democratic government SHOULD promote the welfare of its citizens. The H-1B program needs to be reformed. Job opportunities for citizens must be the the first priority. The federal government in this country is corrupt. Money buys legislation favourable to those willing to pay for it. This is the root of the problem. We need to get money out of politics. Once we do that, sensible legislation can be passed to reform the H-1B system.— March 31, 2016 8:49 a.m.
Appeal set for Gay Pride leather-kilt case
I beg to differ AlexClarke If there are no genitals or pubic hair exposed, why is this a problem for the police? If women were in G-strings at the beer garden sitting at the same table would they be arrested? If the public doesn't like this, then they should ask their elected officials to strengthen the indecent exposure laws so that it is applied equally to men and women, not selectively enforced as it was in this case.— March 8, 2016 7:38 a.m.
Heinous youth
Life without parole should not be an option for sentencing anyone under 18. However, the parole board should think twice about releasing this individual as the crime committed was particularly heinous. Instead of life without parole, we should have an indeterminate sentence for juveniles which a parole board can't cut short by itself; it should require the governor's or POTUS signature.— February 29, 2016 6:26 p.m.
