So Long
this is horrible. there is an emptiness now that cannot be filled. Duncan, please, if possible, put your reviews on another site so they can be easily searched and will not be lost.— December 3, 2010 8:42 p.m.
David Elliott’s Declaration of Pleasure
There is real meaning in the phrases "acquired taste" , and "learn to appreciate". Duncans reviews opened my eyes to all the wonders of film that I would have never seen otherwise. I think what most people have a problem with when it comes to Duncan's reviews, is that they don't really learn or want to learn anything new, and are basically "stuck" in the tastes they acquired early on, probably in adolescence. These are the people BUYING the movies in the $5 box at walmart. So the teeming masses vote some movie to 91%? They also trip over themselves to pack their credit cards with stuff the TV told them to get and buy houses they cant afford. The sad truth is most of humanity is pretty average and pretty boring, with not much to say, and knee-jerk, predictable reactions to pretty much everything. Who cares what they think? In my opinion, Duncans reviews were NEVER incomprehensible, and were in fact a guiding light. You could read his review and then watch the movie (or vice versa) and see exactly what he was talking about. Duncan WAS the best thing about the reader, and nobody can fill his shoes. It is indeed a sad day.— December 3, 2010 7:06 p.m.
The Taunting Goes Too Far in Suburban Texas
GENIUS. This is GENIUS. Clearly all we need to do is outlaw guns, and this would be IMPOSSIBLE. Because clearly the moms gun was LEGAL..oh wait it wasn't.. but somehow a law making it illegal would have prevented her from having one. And of course a law would also prevent all the usual criminals from having THEIR legal weapons...oh wait. Well at least it would prevent non-criminal people who would not illegal acquire a gun, from having one. PHEW. Now I feel safe. Think about it.— September 19, 2010 1:33 p.m.
They Shoot Engineers, Don't They?
Guess what my employment tool is? CRAIGSLIST. I have had no trouble finding and keeping employment from when things hit the fan in Sep 08 to today. If you actualy KNOW how to do circuit design and firmware design, people will pay you to do so. If you drank the kool aid and got your middle-quality-colllege EE degree, GOOD LUCK. Why did you even become an engineer? Jesus christ. Pick up Art of the Electronics, PCB123, a PIC programmer, and MAKE SOMETHING. In my experience, engineers who dont actually like engineering, but went to school and got a degree, tend to be very timid and make EVERY EXCUSE to avoid redesigning or solving any problems using actual engineering. They would much rather band aid and hobble along then actually get into THEIR OWN DESIGN to figure anything out. Its really depressing. They love using student-grade tools and pre-fab design chunks. And strangely they have no idea how to solder or write firmware. Its like they never grew or learned anything once they left college. THIS INCLUDE PHD'S. The greatest engineers I have worked with may or may not have had degrees, but its absolutely clear they love engineering and the college degree was just a footnote. This topic connects directly with whats wrong with America, and whats right. If you are a pointless, empty person with no interests and no desires, you will end up at some giant building desperately trying to get through your life because you never had the guts to explore what you might REALLY be good at. Now you feel like you need to piss on the system because it didnt serve you, and you feel like you are in the majority because there are so many like you. Thats true! YOU ARE THE MAJORITY. There are millions of you zombies. Whats RIGHT about it is that if you actually are very good at what you do in EE work, YOU WILL FIND WORK. PERIOD.— September 19, 2010 9:48 a.m.
