U-T to Stay in Mission Valley for Now; Vows Return to Profitability
When it comes to journalistic integrity and an ethical business culture, the U-T effectively threw in the towel years ago. Keeping up appearances is what they do best.— August 17, 2009 1:41 a.m.
Union-Tribune Axe Falls Again. Kittle Reportedly Out
Don, what is it with guys who wear bow ties? I never could take Bob Kittle seriously when I realized he was permanently tattooed, so to speak, with that bow-tie look. Also, do you know anything about the Rhoades School that he's supposedly involved with? Does it suggest something redeeming about him? The school's mission -- ". . . to establish in each student a singular love of learning for its own sake" -- seems very out of character for someone with Kittle's track record of journalistic abuse of power and questionable ethics. I'm not at all suggesting he get a pass on his past irresponsible professional behavior, but perhaps like many people, he has a few redeeming aspects and a contradictory, and therefore more complex personality.— August 14, 2009 3:26 a.m.
Platinum Bidding for Globe, May Want Business Week
Here's a link to a related story on Boston.com, the Globe's online site. http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/ar… Some interesting tidbits of new information, at least to me.— August 8, 2009 3 p.m.
Blackwater Head Wants to Rid World of Muslims: Testimony
As someone who lives among (but avoids at all costs) an extended family of conservative, self-described evangelical Catholics, I have seen the face of religious totalitarianism, and it's chilling to say the least. You can be sure that Blackwater and its founder "Prince," (how ironic is that name) believe they are righteous in all of their killing and destruction. And hey, they figured out it's possible to make a profit too off of it -- all in the name of God and Jesus Christ. They join the annointed one -- George W. Bush, the head of the posse to catch those evildoers, and the Islamo-fascists of the Bin Laden variety. Welcome to the next global fascist conflict of the 21st century.— August 5, 2009 1:32 p.m.
Platinum Has No Dreams of Editorial Expansion for U-T, Says Black
With apologies to the late Agatha Christie, ". . . and then there was one. . . ." plus one Chief Restructuring Officer. --------------------------------------------------- In response to post #11, I would say mostly naive, with a disingenuous intent. Karin "Survivor-UT" Winner. To the extent that she is the last one standing, I would have to give her the $1 million. This makes me seriously wonder if there was / is a contractual agreement or other unbreachable understanding between Helen Copley and David regarding a life-time job guarantee for Ms. Winner that was part of the deal with Platinum Equity. How else does someone preside over a newspaper's "Editorial Division of Dysfunctional Mediocrity" and get away with it for a lifetime? As David Black commented, . . . "that perfect world isn't going to happen, I don't believe, where you have money to burn in editorial . . . ." Well, there was a time when there was plenty of money, and if someone in charge at the U-T had actually cared about world-class journalism, the Union-Tribune could have been a truly great newspaper. That possibility is gone for good. What a colossal waste of employee training, talent and invested capital.— July 30, 2009 1:18 a.m.
Platinum Equity sued for sexual conduct
------------------------------------------------ The complaint alleged that Platinum executives “show favoritism towards female employees who consent to the employer’s sexual advances by rewarding them with money, gifts and travel, [meanwhile] promoting or rewarding women based on appearance and submission to sexual advances by PE executives, and financially supporting former employees to keep them quiet.” ------------------------------------------------- Wow, more sexual intrigue and shenanigans in the corporate suites. Why Tom Gores and his fellow execs would waste a penny trying to silence this story is beyond me. Do they really think the public thinks they are upstanding pillars of chivalry and moral order? Sounds like a sequel to Citizen Kane is in order here. I'll write the script.— July 20, 2009 5:04 p.m.
Union-Tribune May Lay Off Another 192...But There is Confusion
Must be an EDD glitch, either that or Platinum Equity's numerologist has recommended the use of 192 for its favorable cosmic aspects.— July 9, 2009 10:24 a.m.
U-T Seeking to Rent Part of Headquarters Space
Comment on post #46: Wow oh wow oh wow. The incredible shrinking newspaper organization. I bet a lot of people at the U-T are in shock. Wow oh wow oh wow.— July 9, 2009 10:16 a.m.
U-T Seeking to Rent Part of Headquarters Space
Response to post #44. I'll let it go for now. If I could meet Sarah Palin and have a conversation with her, I believe I could settle this intellect question, for myself at least. I still say that evidence of genuine intellect can be elusive, especially when history has favored men's dominance in national and international politics, and when one's politics are a lightning rod for controversy. Although I imagine several Presidential historians have drawn their own conclusions about Presidential intellects, I think this topic might be deserving of a fresh examination.— July 9, 2009 10:08 a.m.
U-T Seeking to Rent Part of Headquarters Space
Don, regarding the Atex system purchase -- perhaps in order to flip the newspaper, they have to spend some cash to "renovate" the operation, otherwise, not sure who would purchase it in the future without pagination.— July 7, 2009 10:33 p.m.
