Tribune Co. Files for Bankruptcy, Saddled with $13 Billion in Debt and Decline in Ad Revenues
Whatever happened with the lawsuit against Zell & Co. filed by some of the high-profile writers (including Pulitzer winner Dan Neil) at the Times?— December 9, 2008 4:27 p.m.
Union-Tribune's December House Organ Doesn't Report Circulation Figures
You're more likely to get a call back from David himself than company man Drew...— December 9, 2008 4:24 p.m.
Copley Puts Tiny Borrego Sun Up for Sale
Re post #15, he may have kept his nose clean but he sure can't spell.— December 2, 2008 10:25 a.m.
Union-Tribune Employees Camp Out All Night in Lobby To Be First in Line To Get Buyout Forms
This is a somewhat selfish question, but I figured one of you would have the answer. With the future of the U-T in doubt, what happens to employees who served a long enough sentence to rate a pension upon retirement, but who left before retiring and still haven't reached official retirement age? That is, if the company goes belly up before we're old enough to get the payout, what then? Thanks for any advice...— September 4, 2008 4:13 p.m.
Union-Tribune's New Buyout Program Suggests the Company May Be Bought Out Soon, and May Be in Cash Flow Squeeze
Re Post 7, "The truly talented writers at the UT have nothing to fear. They'll land on their feet, learn new skills, and end up better off than when they were under the capricious command of "Happy Days" Captain Copley." It's so true. For those of us who left there (voluntarily) many years ago, it was downright liberating to discover there was a much better life far beyond the management shenanigans and flagrant favoritism. To anyone considering the buyout, I say "go for it!"— August 29, 2008 1:03 p.m.
Canadian Newspaper Company Looking at Union-Tribune; Would Take Advantage of Strong "Loonie"
Did anyone else sadly note the ad stripped across the bottom of A-1 today? They won't dump Burl and Diane, but they'll sell ya space under the fold!— August 25, 2008 5:23 p.m.
A.H. Belo, Initially Considered Candidate To Buy Copley, Reports Big Loss, Layoffs
Given news of reduced news coverage, shrinking editorial space and probably layoffs at the L.A. Times (my West Coast paper of choice), what do you think are the chances of the L.A. Times taking over the U-T? I know they had a San Diego section many years ago...— July 28, 2008 1:55 p.m.
Union-Tribune is up for sale, company tells employees
Maybe she can get a job selling ads at the Pennysaver. Oh, wait... not enough qualifications.— July 25, 2008 11:40 a.m.
Yes We Cannes! The Yacht That Tells a Lacht -- Everything, Actually -- About Copley Newspapers
Just wondering (although I think I can guess the answer): Does the newspaper pay Burl's expenses to jaunt all over the world following the good ship Copleypop? Or is he free to flaunt the "no freebies" policy because he is a contractor? And no, don't want the job -- you couldn't pay me enough to cover that crowd. Although it would make a damn good tell-all someday.— June 17, 2008 1:33 p.m.
U-T, North County Times Lose Circulation, but LA Times, Orange County Register Do Worse
Yesterday we mistakenly got the U-T delivered instead of our usual L.A. Times. We felt as though we'd received lukewarm coffee out of a vending machine rather than our usual freshly-brewed French roast...— April 29, 2008 11:55 a.m.
