Ben hurts...but these ten remakes don’t
"Norman Jewison’s flashy romantic crime drama — the cinematic equivalent of a bored model fanning through the pages of a fashion magazine..." (*gasp!*) Your right! McQueen laughs maniacally at how brilliant he is after the first heist and has a brooding air craft sequence to show how rich but reckless he is. Dunaway is the most glamorous insurance investigator that never existed- except Eddie G. Robinson in Double indemnity. Could this remake be the last good (but not great) John McTiernan movie? I Like Carpenter's The Thing, alot, but it barely has anything in common with the original except the setting. Hell, the alien isn't even a vegetable played by a TV cowboy!— September 8, 2016 5:02 p.m.
Ghostbusters reboot scares up spin-off
It does my heart good to see such a lazy idea fail with an optimistic green-light for a direct to video/streaming sequel. With a luke-warm endoresment by their head of distribution how couldn't it happen....however, I'm told this movie/4-quad tent-pole is good for social justice.... So, I'll submit some proposed titles: Ghostbusters 2: The Return of Durant; Ghostbusters 2: Texas Blood Money; Ghostbusters 2: Phantasm 4, and most recently; Ghostbusters 2: The Man With the Iron Fists. And, yes I know, I put in more thought into this stupid post than the writers and producers put in their movie. Don't remind me or anyone else for that matter.— July 20, 2016 9:52 p.m.
Marx Madness
Your favorite Bill Cosby vehicle is Hickey and Boggs...? 'bout damn time you started talking sense, you Pink Flamingos-watching madman! I can't say more, they're playing H&B on a UHF channel and I gotta see it again.... "That's one less sports fan..." Indeed, Robert Culp, indeed...— September 23, 2015 1:30 p.m.
Scott Marks, Annotated: Invasion of the Star Creatures
Someone needs to bring Night Flight to DVD.... Streaming and Youtube clips won't do.— May 27, 2014 12:45 p.m.
Lighting by Cundey
You mentioned "Garfield", but no "Big Trouble in Little China"? That movie is a prime example of coked-up 80's enthusiasm! I guess you waited for "Aliens" to come out a week later in 1986 instead....— April 24, 2014 7:55 p.m.
The Best Films of 2013
I agree with Marks in this forum fight because as a film critic he should point the way or out right champion films that his readership isn't aware of yet. If he didn't showcase them then the movie-going public might become convinced via The Lone Ranger's and Catching Fire's massive marketing campaigns that these are the only kind of films being made and that would make our viewing lifes a little less colorful or a downright living Hell. Besides all of us commentors are seeking out a film website/page and should know this isn't some Byron Allen celebrity interview/puff piece show. Marks should be commended for not believing that EVERY year movies get worse or that EVERY year there's nothing worth seeing. He's like a bloodhound who's trained to sniff out truffles and it leads him to strange places! As for what's on the list: Saw WOWS in theater because... It's Marty! C'mon! Saw Olympus Has Fallen" and thought it knew exactly what kind of movie it was and was all the better for doing so. Didn't see "Drug War" in theater, but I immediately bought it on DVD when I first saw it on the shelf because that's how much I like Jonnie To's work. I'm going to seek out "NO" and "London: The Modern Babylon" when they hit video. How'd I miss Malick's latest? *slaps forehead* and "Only God Forgives" seems to lurid for me *at the moment* so I'll wait till I'm the right mood to see it. You picked a good crop this year, Scott!— January 4, 2014 1:15 a.m.
The ten worst films of 2013
The worst thing about these worst-of-lists isn't the schadenfreude or the fact it's a list when there are so many online, but the mental trauma of remembering that turds like "The Big Wedding", "R.I.P.D." and "Movie 43" existed after forgetting they did. Hell, I didn't recall that there was a fifth "Die Hard" released in February; that's how forgettable it was!— December 31, 2013 7:04 p.m.
Scorsese’s fugazis
"DiCaprio’s collaborations with Mr. S have reached the point where I no longer miss De Niro." Liar! Even so, I had many "how'd the director get the star to do that?" moments in this one. Highlights: a candle up the butt, Leo smacking his microphone on his head like he's an imperial Japanese soldier smacking a grenade against his helmet in "flowers of war" followed by making a lower-jaw pouting guerrilla face, opening his gull-winged car door with his foot and being dragged up, any and all spasm dancing and flexing his muscles in the middle of marital fight. All in all, a very enjoyable three hour movie. The only gripe (not a flaw) is we didn't see him interact with his wife and kid, so when he gets threatened with divorce we don't know why he's freaking out. Wayda'minute, that's a strength not a weakness! It cuts out all the faux-sweet bullcrap! This movie rocks and has a perfect cameo for Matthew McConaughey! P.S. readers: don't complain about spoilers, because all those highlights need to be seen in context to be believed....— December 27, 2013 12:33 a.m.
And into the Oven
"Though he was drunk at the wheel, the collision was technically the victim’s fault." Oh, I hate it when a sober person hits a innocent drunk!— December 5, 2013 11:57 a.m.
None
That's funny..... In the 2004 and 2005 range all my mouth was pronouncing was "F%$k you, f*#k you, f^&k you, ect." during those annoying "Do you want-a Fanta?" ads.— October 15, 2013 4:49 p.m.
