Rather than push the envelope of all that beer can be, AleSmith expat Matt Akin has chosen to craft textbook versions of English and West Coast-style beers. It’s a daunting and, at times, thankless undertaking in a town full of drinkers looking for the newest, hoppiest, oddest thing a brewer can produce, but any purist can appreciate the beauty in Akin’s exceptional beers, which includes an oatmeal stout that will be served in multiple cask iterations at Benchmark’s elemental, wood- and map-adorned tasting room.
