Christopher Vega's got talent, but does he have The Voice? Christopher Vega is a 7-year-old Oneonta Elementary School second grader in Imperial Beach and is competing on Telemundo’s La Voz Kids (The Voice Kids) featuring child singers ages 7-14. The winner will receive a recording contract with Universal Music and a scholarship. The show follows the same format of NBC’s successful “The Voice” with blind auditions, battle rounds and live shows. The three judges are Mexican pop star Paulina Rubio, Prince Royce a bachata singer from New York and Roberto Tapia who writes inspirational music with positive messages. During the blind audition where the coaches' decisions are based solely on voice. The coaches hear the singers perform, but they don't get to see them, due to rotating chairs. If a coach is impressed by a singer's voice, he or she pushes a button to select that person for his or her team. At this point, the coach's chair swivels so he or she can face the person selected. Once the teams are set, coach’s work with their vocalists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their musical success. .During an impromptu show at his after school program before leaving for Florida to audition Christopher sang several songs in Spanish including “La De La Mochila Azul” or The Girl with the Blue Backpack about a boy at school having a crush on a girl. His classmates described his performance as “Amazing”, “Awesome”, “Perfect”, or like Karla Sanchez said “He is the best ever.” “I was speechless”, Christopher’s teacher Tiane Alaman said when she heard him sing. “My jaw dropped, I was that blown away. He’s a very hard worker in class. A good friend to his classmates and loves to make everyone laugh so it shouldn’t surprise me that he’s a talented performer.” On the Sunday, March 19 episode Christopher auditioned and was chosen by Judge Roberto Tapia, who was born in San Diego and got his first No.1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart last August with his 11th album, "El Muchacho."

Three teen boys attempt to gain entry into local elementary school classroom At approximately 2:30 pm Saturday, May 4 three teenage boys were confronted on the campus of a local elementary school. They seemed relaxed and said they were just "getting a drink of water." They were escorted off campus before their misdeeds were discovered. They had scattered lost and found clothes around, knocked over several trash cans, wrapped playground swings over the top of the support posts. They also removed window screens to one classroom in a possible attempt to gain entry. The Sheriff was contacted and a description of the teens given to the responding deputy who said if he found them he would bring them back to the school to clean things up. Two of the teens had large ear lobe plugs.

'Veronica Mars the Movie' not filming in San Diego? In an exclusive interview Stu Segall owner of Stu Segall Studios in Kearny Mesa where three seasons of the Veronica Mars TV series were filmed told me that there was no room at his studio "I'm in the military business now." Segall operates Strategic Operations out of the studio which provides "Hyper-Realistic" training environments for military, law enforcement and other organizations responsible for homeland security and public safety. Besides “Veronica Mars” many other primetime television series were shot at the studio including “Renegade”, “Pensacola”, “Wings of Gold”, ‘’The Invisible Man”, “The Chronicle”, “18 Wheels of Justice”, “High Tide”, “Cover Me”, “Rising Son”, Veronica Mars, “Desire”, “Secret Obsessions” and “Terriers”. What does Veronica Mars have to do with Imperial Beach? The second season finale ‘Not Pictured’ shot the graduation scenes in the Mar Vista High School gymnasium.

2013 San Diego County School Volunteer of the Year Award. DonorNation, an online philanthropic marketplace, is hosting the 2013 San Diego County School Volunteer of the Year Award and is joined by Sprouts Farmers Market. Marla Fernandez, Principal of Oneonta Elementary School nominated Pete Salisbury saying “Mr. Pete, as he is called by the staff, students and the school community, is an exemplary volunteer. In the five years that I have been the site principal, he has not missed one day of work. He voluntarily organizes and trains the Safety Patrol and during the day before he works as a Noontime Supervisor, you can see Mr. Pete taking out the recess equipment, organizing the next PTA event or promoting a school wide event. He is known for dressing up in costume as parents arrive to school to invite them to different school activities. As the PTA treasurer, he spends countless hours participating in every single PTA function. He truly cares about our school and our community and he shows that he cares by the amount of time he spends volunteering his time at our school.” The winner chosen from over 100 candidates will get a $5000 donation in their name to their school from DonorNation, as well as one year of free groceries from Sprouts Farmers Market. So If I holler and nobody comments does that mean I'm not making any noise? If you live in Imperial Beach and this past Saturday, April 27 your car or house was egged you can rest easy. My house was egged around 4:00 pm by someone with a weak arm as the eggs only reached my welcome mat. I rode my bike around the neighborhood and talked to a few folks whose cars were egged. On Monday someone's daughter heard a classmate talking about throwing eggs. She told her mom, mom called the Sheriff and last night the Sheriff confronted the 10 year old boy and he confessed. Sadly, I know the kid and his family.

I’m a regular Imperial Beach contributor to The Readers Neighborhood Stories and the News Ticker feature but have been silent this past April but not for lack of trying. On Wednesday, April 10 there was a 2 hour power outage affecting an elementary school and hundreds of residents south of Grove Ave. in the Oneonta neighborhood. SDG&E acknowledged it on their official Twitter feed but offered no explanation. I asked SDG&E if it was due to an accident, sabotage or poor maintenance. They replied they needed my “address” to provide an answer. I replied saying they acknowledged the outage on a public forum so they could certainly offer an explanation on a public forum. I’m still waiting. On Sunday, April 14 outside a condo near Seacoast Blvd. several people witnessed three objects flying in the sky around 8:00 pm. They heard a boom sound from the west then lights appeared in the sky. A witness talking on the phone at the time told the person on the other end “I see something strange in the sky and will call you back. I want to try and photograph it.” That person told me they would put me in touch with the witness. I’m still waiting. On Thursday, April 25 at 10:29 pm 12 gunshots were heard between 10th & 11th Street on Imperial Beach Blvd. I stood outside waiting to hear sirens or see the ASTRA helicopter buzz into the area. Nothing happened. The following morning I talked to three residents in a 2 block area and they had all heard the gunshots. I contacted the San Diego Sheriff that patrols the streets of Imperial Beach and have yet to get an explanation. If you know of any of these incidents or anything Imperial Beach related feel free to contact me. I'm on Twitter @tuckerpete

At the end of Coronado Ave on the south west corner of Seacoast stands a three story blue trimmed white condo/apartment with a new tenant that seemingly has a beef with the existence of my feathered friends that live here at the beach. Recently there has been a new bird sound filling the sea air,. It's not any more of a real bird then Big Bird from Sesame Street, but nearly as annoying as he. Among the multiple statues of fake hawks and owls that now don the decor of this building. is a sound speaker screeching out recorded hawk cries in close intervals and frequency. I presume it's to detour the pigeons, seagulls and/or crows from doing bird things in or around their area. Problem is that it's not just the birds that are being effected.
Tell me new neighbor, if you feel so strongly about keeping birds away from your home, don't you think moving across the street from an estuary might have been a bad idea?

Oh, monster neighbors are terrible. The ones who disturb others peace just for self gratification are horrible. I feel bad for you and the birds who I am sure were there before the new tenant. I live in front of jobless, drug addicts on the north end of Silver Strand Blvd. Nothing worse than having lots junkies walking by your place to go get high and hang out on a regular basis. My situation is so concerning, I actually installed surveillance cameras to protect what I work so hard for. I understand how you feel being disturbed by inconsiderate imbeciles.

Who decided on making Palm Avenue one lane? Makes no sense at all. There is traffic now at 7 am. Another bad idea for IB. Wouldnt a nice boardwalk on the beach be money better spent?
