Carlsbad Village Faire Today I was a very brave person. Despite my inner voice telling me to stay home, give my busy self a relaxing day for a change, I put the lease on my dog and we headed out for the Carlsbad Village Faire. Where else can you walk a crowd of more than 100,000 with a propaganda sign in your hand and not be arrested or accosted? I left my signs and home, had to walk with my dog in my arms much of the way, but survived a day at the massive Carlsbad Village Faire, the largest single day street fair in the nation.
Visited by more than 100,000 people who crave crowds, the streets are packed elbow to elbow from 8 to 5 rain or shine. For 40 years now they keep coming, some new and unsuspecting folks, and some that have been coming for 40 years. "I didn't know it was this big," and "Where does this thing end?" are comments I heard frequently while pushing my way through the streets.
Despite the crowds, most of my friends go to the street fair. I used to man the Carlsbad Gourmet booth with my family but now just walk amongst the crowd in search of something new, stopping to say hello to friends I see all along the way, and stopping for a beer at either O'Sullivan's, Hennessey's, or Coyote giving me the chance to go to the bathroom in a real bathroom.
Who wasn't there?

Carlsbad's history is in it's soil. Yes, the alkaline water is what founded Carlsbad, but Carlsbad's character runs deep in the dirt. Formerly full of agricultural lands, the city has been overtaken by development both business and residential. Now with Legoland California, golf club manufacturers, biotech industry including billion dollar Life Technologies, the essence of Carlsbad's history can be experienced by visiting The Flower Fields , the U Pick It Strawberry fields
by just driving through the neighborhoods, or taking the I-5 off-ramp at Canon Road exit, blanketed with purple ground cover beauty.

Can someone explain the wall blocking the view from (or near?) Armada Drive to the colorful mass of flowers on the rolling hills at Carlsbad Ranch, 5704 Paseo Del Norte? The Carlsbad flower fields are in full bloom and open to visitors until May 12, for $11 each adult, $10 for seniors and $6 for kids. www.theflowerfields.com A neighbor said she remembers back in the day when a visit to the nearly 50-acres of flowers was free, but nevertheless, street views have remained a popular choice for some. Might those days be over, too?

Did you know that Carlsbad offers free Neighborhood Conflict Resolution services to help settle issues between people who may be considering taking the matter to a judge? The program is confidential, and trained volunteers meet with the involved parties to help guide them toward a mutual agreement. Some of the cases that were resolved last year, in the program's first year, include a noise issue between neighbors who shared a common wall, two business partners who were dissolving their business, and an issue between a father and son. The free mediation services do not handle divorce cases, according to the city. Carlsbad Mediation Solution Hotline: (760) 434-2868
