Barona Resort & Casino

1932 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside

The Barona Band of Mission Indians, which runs a big casino, golf course, and resort in East County, usually spends at least five figures every three months on its contract lobbyist, Sacramento’s Onate Group, which also works for the Table Mountain Rancheria and the Los Angeles Police Protective League, among other clients.

In this year’s third quarter, though, the tribe reported it paid nothing to the firm, but a total of $2725 in “activity expenses” to a host of California legislators and their staffs. Democrat Robert Hertzberg, the former assembly speaker now running for state senate in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, got hotel accommodations worth $96.12 on September 3. Democratic senator Ted Lieu got a “hotel amenity” in the form of “birthday balloons and cake” valued at $47.97. GOP senator Joel Anderson was part of a group of Republicans who sat down for a meal at the resort valued at $72.26 a piece. Assembly Democrat Shirley Weber stayed closer to home, getting free food at downtown’s Westgate Hotel worth $17.58.
