We spent the next three days at a campground right on the cliffs of Sorrento, a small port town nestled into rock cliffs with lush vegetation throughout, which offered amazing views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Mt. Vesuvius.

During our time in Sorrento, we dove off nearby cliffs into blue-green water (finally!), ate some of the best food we had ever eaten, drank some of the tastiest wine and simply enjoyed our surroundings. Our first days in Italy had greatly exceeded our expectations, but we knew in the back of our minds that this was just the beginning of our Mediterranean adventures. Greece was on the horizon, and we knew that we were in for some real debauchery.

Sounds like fun times! Pompeii's a great place. Your story brings back good memories. Is that you in the photo?

Reminds me of visiting Naples via Navy aircraft carriers Indepedence and Nimitz in the 70's. Took the train to Pompeii and Ercolano to see the ruins. Carriers must anchor out in the bay of Naples and ride to shore in "liberty boats" carried aboard the ship. The hulk of Mt. Vesuvius looms over the scene. Great memories!

I haven't been to Italy in more than 30 years. This engaging story brings it all back in vivid detail. The argument with the cop is classic! You're an excellent story-teller Matthew Veseskis!
