Morley Field Disc Golf Course
Corner of Pershing Drive and Redwood Street, Balboa Park
It costs $1 to play here weekdays (when it's open from 8:00 a.m. to dusk); $1.50 on weekends (when it opens at 7:00 a.m.). The goal is simple: to throw your Frisbee into a series of baskets in as few throws as possible. Snapper Pierson, an honoree in the Disc Golf Hall of Fame, runs the operation and staffs the pro shop. He says that at the quietest times a player might move through the course in an hour or so. But few times are quiet; this is the busiest disc golf course in the country, according to Pierson; close to 100,000 people a year play here. Sunday afternoons are craziest; it can take up to two and a half hours to complete all 19 holes then. Pierson and his crew reconfigure the course every Monday to make it easier on the grass and more interesting for regulars. You can play with an ordinary Frisbee, but anyone who's serious uses the flatter and heavier discs specially made for this sport. The pro shop sells and rents around 60 different varieties.
