What do you call a low budget, largely improvised horror film that’s shot in SeizureVision and dead on arrival? Mumblecorpse. Remember The Strangers, the atrocious slasher film where married couple Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are terrorized by a band of masked spree killers while staying at an isolated vacation home? Same crap, different mask. Adam Wingard’s You’re Next ups the potential chill factor with equally remote, albeit swankier digs in which to celebrate an anniversary party/family reunion for a defense contractor and his frazzled wife. Fanboy connoisseurs will no doubt praise this common sewer pic for its empowered female lead and sudden third-act tonal shift to screwball comedy, but a slasher film by any other name smells. With Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, and (SPOILER ALERT!) Wendy Glenn as the cigarette smoker. 2013.
