Alexander Payne’s film is on Hawaiian time and floats well below his Sideways. George Clooney is the rich Honolulu lawyer whose faithless wife has crashed into a coma. He is also trustee for a huge patch of Kauai that excites his greedy relatives and his wife’s lover. His trip with his daughters has some wry humor, leading to live-and-learn pathos. It’s like The Little Foxes adrift in a Hawaiian travelogue. Clooney tries hard, but his hair does best. Acting laurels go to subtle Shailene Woodley as the older daughter and Robert Forster as her grumpy gramps. With Judy Greer, Nick Krause, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, Laird Hamilton. 2011.
