Writer-director Jill Soloway digs into the psyche of the happy homemaker's shadow self, the miserable mommy. (When all your needs are met, that's when you notice you're unhappy.) Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) is uninterested in her child, unmoved by her husband, and unconsoled by her friends. On a joyless lark, she accompanies her man to a strip club and has a close encounter with McKenna (Juno Temple), a full-service sex worker who seems comfortable in her skin. She winds up inviting McKenna to stay with her - sisters helping sisters and all that. In Rachel's own words, this is tantamount to throwing a bomb into the middle of her life. Even if the bomb ends the war, there are always casualties. Clear-eyed characterization, unfettered dialogue, and crystalline performances help to keep the story from stagnating. 2013.
