Starting Over

Modern romance with a "smart" outlook. The jokes seldom seem to occur in the normal course of things, but instead necessitate swerves, detours, and pit stops. Better than usual attention to how personal tastes (in music, in clothes, in home furnishings, in behavior) intrude into relationships, but still plenty of room for more work in that area. The tastes of only one of the three principals, a budding songstress who turns every life crisis into a melody and lyric, are held up to ridicule, and the obvious favoritism reduces the suspense and the psychology in the movie to whether the genial hero will choose the nice woman or the horrid one. Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh, Candice Bergen, and Charles Durning; directed by Alan J. Pakula. 1979.
