Under Heaven

Contemporization, and commonization, of Henry James's The Wings of the Dove. The two youthy riffraffy Seattle fortune-hunters, Cynthia and Buck, who get high on cough syrup and say things like "Chill out," do their share to lower the proceedings. But it is impossible not to retain some interest as long as the story remains recognizable. And Joely Richardson, as the dying heiress, has plenty to bring to the banal script: plenty of fragility, plenty of subtlety, plenty of feeling. With Molly Parker and Aden Young; written and directed by Meg Richman. 1998.
