Nowhere to Run
Van Damme as the archetypal Stranger in Town (all the way from Québec: hence his accent), an escaped convict who wanders onto the property of a husbandless/fatherless family currently getting squeezed by evil land developers. (Shane by the numbers, and without the husband/father to complicate matters.) The star possesses a soulful deadpan to go along with, or compensate for, his overinflated torso and martial-arts monkeyshines; and Ted Levine's resonant baritone sounds as though he really means business as the bad guy. But the lack of conviction becomes epidemic: a marathon chase scene; a conscious evocation of Home Alone, with Kieran (brother of Macaulay) Culkin taking out one of the thugs; a slow-slow-slow-motion shootout.
