Girls Town

If it was a movie, we'd have shot fifty people by now, trumpets one of the all-girl quartet of high-school seniors, soon reduced by suicide to a trio. "No, this ain't no movie." Agreed, although the thunk-ker-thunk-thunk-ker-thunk-thunk in the background sounds a lot like any and every youth movie, and the two revenges against two separate rapists diverge from Hollywood convention mainly in their low degree of severity and their absence of consequence. You wait for the other shoe to drop, and wait, and wait. Basically (in the appropriate parlance), it's just, ya know, like, basically, a coupla three girls hangin' an' chillin' an' messin' aroun' an' dissin' an' bullshittin' an' shitlikethat. The self-evident method, under the hands-off and arm's-length direction of Jim McKay, is of course "improvisational," and the familiar result is a rapid and deep bore. Lili Taylor, Bruklin Harris, Anna Grace. 1996.
